I'm very happy with the def I have. The only few things I'd change, and one day probably will, are things like a roll cage and treegliders and some extra gear.
In other words, my ultimate defender will be an achievable goal. I love it being such an anomaly on our roads. Love the fact men become little children looking at them. Guess it's becouse it has the shape of the cars we drew when we were one. I also find it funny it turns more heads then a ferrari, if you know what I mean. I work in an environment that is known for it's rich people. Love it when a Panamera stops next to me and the child pounts at the def telling his father he bought the wrong car. I don't understand why people want to turn their defs into discos and then not just buy the disco. |

I haven't read all 5 pages of this thread so hope I am not repeating what any one else has said....the ultimate defender is the one you own...end of.....one would presume you have spent a large percentage of your free time tinkering and perfecting it to fit your own personal needs...it is therefore yours and no one else's. Perfection

AAHH GRiffman ...6.2L V8....We've had a few of them....not in a 90 though.....and of course, ya just gotta have a good exhaust,.....there's nothing better than the sound of a V8 working hard.
Where do ya find one?.....Just gotta have the dollars I guess, because to do it right would cost serious dollars. Our latest V8 release in Aus is the 430KW 740NM LSA engine just released in the HSV GTS. This is the 6.2L Supercharged GM LSA engine....which would be absolutely ideal for a 90 I reckon? Cheers, Pickles. |

Mr Pickles
Sorry to here about the fires - hope things settle down soon. Now, us Pommie Bstrds don't do KWs and NMs - we do good old fashioned imperial horsepower and LB/FT's and Ft/LBs of torque. I hope you are enjoying your AMG mercedes My car in fact has a small-block chevy L98 4-bolt engine with a forged stroker crank kit giving 6.3 litres (383CI) Then I have a complete edelbrock top end including heads, cam, rockers, inlet, carb etc - all very simple and straightforward and very easy to set up and maintain Although it makes a moderate 380 bhp at the flywheel, the torque is produces is prodigious - and from virtually no revs. It peaks at 450lbs at 3600 rpm but the curve is vurtually flat. Surely in a landrover this is what is required. |

Griffman.....Awesome.....have you ever put up pics & full details of your vehicle, engine bay, interior, exhaust etc, I'd LOVE to see that! I think I remember seeing a write up in a UK magazine of a Keswick 90 with a 383 in it...I thought that was pretty good.
KW/NM...Haha.....well I know it's 570 HP, don't know what the torque would be in ft lbs, but it'd be PLENTY...from just above idle. The fires have been bad & we're not really into the fire "season" yet, but the ones to which you refer are about 800ks away from us. We had some REALLY bad ones down here a few years ago...people are still getting over them. The C63 is good...plenty of grunt, & it sounds good too. I remember one time Wifey was driving & we took the car to show a friend for the first time, so when our friend comes out, Wifey gives it a rev,....my friend's comment was ..."Is that Legal"?!!! Haven't even got our 90 yet,...it's still on a boat, expected in Melbourne 26/10, then gotta go through compliance, get to Dealer etc, so we'll probably have it around 8-9/11. Ordered 5th June.....it's been a long wait! Cheers, Pickles. |

yes that was my green 90 with the 383........................................................ only changes from the article is that I have swapped the twisted alloys for some Overfinch ones. Did you see there is a 50th for sale near you? my landie now done 4000 miles and she is running like a sweetheart - also voted coolest car at my daughter's prep school by the boys - beat off a Lambo Aventador, a Fezza 430, Cobra 427 and various other AMG mercs, Porkers and wot av u. Got pulled over for speeding the other week - swore blind to the copper that I was doing 70 on the motorway - he said I was doing 82, which is 12 above the limit - turns out my speedo is under-reading quite a lot - put the GPS on it and was doing 120 at an indicated 105 - very scary though. also had the 0-62(100km/h) done - 5.3 seconds - not too shabby for a 29 year-old landy hope the landy gets there soon |

"Well, you've got an awesome beast, that's for sure.
I'm very familiar with the L98 block, because it's used in some of our Commodores. I note you use the term "4 Bolt". We refer to them as "6 bolt", because they have 4 bolts in the bottom, & 1 on each side, of the cap. The "50th" is one of my favourites, & I have seen it for sale. Unfortunately, it's been messed around with a bit, not too much, but it's not totally original. When I was in the UK in 2001 I saw one parked at Petts Wood Railway Station....didn't know what it was at the time, but it looked good, so I took a photo. We owned a 1985 Australian assembled Ford Bronco at the time, 351 Cleveland V8, C6 Auto, 9" rear etc,....very tough,...very tough on fuel too...about 9 or 10 to the gallon, less in traffic!! There's no substitute for cubic inches as we used to say, and as they say now, there's no replacement for displacement! Cheers, Pickles. |

This. ^^ Add a roof tent, a few pots and pans and plenty of open road. My Defender is a means to an end, not the end in itself. My priority lists of modifications are: Front bumper (because the original one is a rusty pile of crap) Ladder (to mount the flag pole to when at festivals!) Roof rack Tent. After that I'd like a better stereo because I spend a lot of time in the car listening to music, a CB maybe, split charge system if I decide to get a solar panel to keep everything topped up while the car is parked up for long periods (to give me a night light). Other than that it's camping gear which I'm not sure counts as part of the car. |
