If you brought it knowing the engine was XX, I would just bite the bullet and get a replacement, last time I looked Duckworth Parts site sponsor had a few, also many companies are now removing 2.2 Puma's and replacing them with other engines so there are quite a few removed engines appearing on the market.
If you had the skill and confidence and the tools stripping and rebuilding is an option but it is fraught with potential problems and you may find it is XX anyway and then you have just wasted your time. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

I’d take the rocker cover off and have a look, you’ve nothing to lose. They drop rockers and damage the cams mostly. I would avoid the aftermarket rebuild kits some of the quality of parts in them isn’t very good.
New engines are available from the likes of Turner Engineering - a complete second hand might be your cheapest option. |

Bits of the turbo from the previously failed turbo, so means no one bothered to clean up, or the new turbo disintegrated? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I would replace the external parts that need replacing, remove the rocker cover and sump and check/clean up swarf, flush out the galleries with oil and then just see how it goes.
Worst case scenario the engine dies a death, but this leaves you no worse off than now. Best case scenario the engine is ok and you are quids in. I would also replace the injector seals whilst you are at it. This could be one cause of low compression > 110 XS Double Cab |

I agree with Hank.
I'd be inclined to give the existing engine a 'go' first, before going to the effort and expense of swapping it out. Most of the bits that you'll clean/check replace would be reused if/when you change the engine, so the spent cost is probably worth it. |

A blown turbo compressor should not find itself up in the rocker cover or sump unless they severely damaged the bore and caused the rings to scrape on the bore resulting is swarf in the oil sump. I had a case of a blown turbo compressor, albeit on a much larger engine, and all (or at at least most) of the particles were caught by the intercooler. There was no apparent damage to the engine. Low compression could also be caused by particles caught between the valve seats. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Yeah it should all be in the inlet/exhaust but since Charlie148 mentions that there are metal particles in the filter something has found its way into the oil system. No harm in giving it a clean > 110 XS Double Cab

Turbo debris can quite easily find its way down the oil drain from the turbo to the sump.

Thanks all for the advice!
Dropped the sump today and no sewed in there, took the rocker cover off and all looks clean with no scraping on anything! As Hank says minimal cost to rebuild compared to buying new so worth a shot! Injectors have been sent off for testing, seals and washers on the shopping list thanks all really appreciate the advise! Will keep you posted when I get it running again! |
