The axle number is stamped on the axle casing tube. Its quite hard to spot if the axle is rusty or heavily painted though as its only dot punched.

could it be it rusted away?
cause I blanked the back and front axle where lr works says they should be and could not find anything. As you can see on the third picture, if it was there, I should see it, no? |

Why do you need the axle number? What are you trying to find out?

Earlier axle cases were full number stamps, not dots.
Both my axle cases were rusted to the extent that no numbers existed. I changed my rear axle case as it was cheaper (and made a better job) than replacing the various rusted brackets. The replacement was from a 300tdi discovery - that had full numbers. I also replaced the front axle case as I got one for the right price (£100 and it was like new). I believe this was from 300tdi defender (but not 100%) and I had to change to the wider radius arms as my original case was a 200tdi 10 spline. The new case has its number via dot matrix. Not sure when they changed, but obviously they did! I DO APOLOGISE, I HAVE JUST NOTICED THIS IS IN THE TD5 SECTION SO I WOULD EXPECT YOUR NUMBER TO BE DOT STAMPED SO MORE LIKELY TO BE AFFECTED BY RUST. Also beware that whilst you may get an axle build type from the number, that build may have been altered by the replacement of parts. The older your vehicle is the more chance there is that what you have is not original!
There is a lot of knowledge on this forum, so also ask questions on here about your axle as hopefully you will get the help to repair/restore your vehicle. |

I was trying to be lazy and find out weather it is a 13s or a 63s to know if it would have the hole for the ABS Sensor Bushing. I guess I'll find out when I dismantle it.
It is indeed a 130 TD5 from late 2002 Thanks all for the help so far. |

Should be able to tell from looking at the backing plate, axle end even maybe if you take a picture.

I know the defender does not have ABS, so the backing plate probably will not tell me, or will it? I was more interested if it would be ABS ready.  Click image to enlarge |

Wrong side, but there should be a round hole opposite side of the two calliper bolt mounting lugs.
