Depsite being designed for the purpose, I have never seen a factory fitted or dealer fitted socket in the recess!

I can't understand why if LR designed this hole for this purpose they didn't amend the fitting instructions for the towing electrics kit accordingly.

I thought the smaller hole through the centre was a necessary access hole to reach a bolt for the fuel tank or something?

Jammer600, it looks great. How did you attached the plug to the cross member? Thanks, Paul

The easiest way is to install some rivnuts:

You can see how I did mine here: https://www.defender2.net/forum/post879215.html#879215 Darren

These guys do a plate that only needs 2 fixings to get it on then the electrics bolts to that. Wanted one when I fitted mine but could not get it in time. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

To be honest, that seems like complete overkill (and expensive) for what is a pretty easy installation anyway Darren

My tow electrics have been taken off and I can't find where the plug is in the wheel arch to re-attach. Can anyone point me in the right direction, is it in the rear drivers side wheel arch? Many thanks, Paul

Hi Paul
Yes, the socket is at the top slightly towards the back of the drivers side rear wheel arch. Under a flap.

I can’t remember if you fold the flap or have to remove it…..

The flap is a piece of stiff plastic and is designed to protect the back of the lights from wheel spray. It's held in place with a couple of screws into spire nuts, both of which tend to rust solid unfortunately. It's common to have to drill them out and if you do, then replace them with something made of stainless.

This picture is of the other side with the flap removed but you can see the fixing points along the top edge:
