Sorry, as said above, its anr 4583. Posts edited. I see numbers differently to how they're written sometimes, its annoying really, I even went out to check the wheels and still wrote it down wrong. Mark.

Hi,
Does anyone have any images of a black 90 with lighter wolf wheels, anthracite or maybe even white/cream? I’ve just picked up five genuine rims in white which need a little tlc, but not a lover of them in black as previously stated you lose the definition. Currently got boosts which I had powder coated dark grey. I’ve read this thread and can’t quite see what I’m after so any help would be great. |

Maybe putting the cat amongst the pigeons here…
Why does everyone seem to autopilot to 235/85/16 or 265/75/16. What’s wrong with 245/75/16 for example? I understand the principal of width vs percentage of tyre width height, and have used this to calculate heights across the different sizes, thus, the question, why not a wider variety of tyres?! Full background - just bought 5 original Wolf wheels that I’ll be refurbing and really struggling with tyre choice and size to give a nice size bump over the 205/80/16 on there now. Want to keep a decent gap to the arch. |

Several reasons: those sizes have been factory standard for many years and are therefore what the vehicles are set up for. They are a good 'fit' in terms of physical clearance and visual proportions whilst also providing a decent amount of ground clearance.
There are sound arguments for fitting larger tyres if warranted for the proposed use but very few for fitting smaller ones. The only practical example I can think of is for those who have a height issue with their garage or car park. The downside though is that they look completely lost in the arches. You'll be very much in the minority if you think that smaller than the typical sizes is visually appealing. Wanting to keep a decent arch gap is a perfectly valid basis for tyre choice but as there are no clearance issues with the typical sizes then it would seem odd to go smaller just for that. 90's were originally fitted with smaller tyres (205/80's or 6.50's) but this was basically a carry over from Series Land Rover days. They were dropped for all but the most basic models many years ago. What this does mean though is that it is possible to make adjustments to accommodate the difference in speedo reading that they create by swapping a small drive gear in the transfer box. I guess I’m potentially being a little cheap, as all the 235/265 tyres seem considerably more expensive and considerably less available than other ‘different’ sizes! |

This is unfortunately true. I think that's because the smaller sizes are more commonly fitted to mass market SUV's whilst typical Defender sizes are a bit niche these days. Darren

You might want to try 7.50x16 tyres as well. Nominally the same size as 235/85/16. Both look great on wolf wheels.
Also, keep an eye on places like Black circles, 4x4 tyres, tyres direct and kiwi fit as they do have multi buy deals on from time to time. For instance Kwik fit have 10% off on certain brands in July. It is worth shopping around and it is worth calling up and asking if they can do a deal on a set of four or five tyres. Be cheeky

Yeah that’s another thought pattern entirely - I’ve only driven the thing about 250miles so far on tiny little 205s.
Having used big KO2s on a lifted D2 (max 80mph) and Pirelli Scorpion AT+ on a D3 (max… too fast) I think I’d be happy with full mud/AT on the defender, as in my limited experience of it, I didn’t get it over 65mph, and don’t think I’d want to. My logic is telling me at those kind of speeds that even a massive chunky mud tyre isn’t going to be too bad…. The D2 with a 2” lift and big BFG KO2s felt really good on the road and off the road even at good speed. Happy to be told otherwise. |

I'm coming to the end of a restoration on my 90 giving it a heritage look. I've now had the new Wolfs sprayed the same as the body colour and looking to get some tyres fitted as one of the final jobs.
I've gone a fair bit over budget so as much as I want the look of the BFG A/T tyres they've just got very pricey and I need 5. I was looking at the Cooper Discoverer ST Max as it will be a saving of £250. Insa Turbo Ranger A/T I know are a remould/recycled but 50% less than BFG. Only going to be an occasional use vehicle and not off road-ed but want a chunky look without the mud terrain road noise. Any suggestions? 21 Defender D300 H/Top 63 FFRR SDV8 86 90 Pick Up 3.9 V8 |
