Only 2 years late...
It wasn't the brake cleaner that killed my alternator. I (foolishly) nipped the wire I ran to the rev counter under the alternator's cover when putting it together. The insulation failed and the short killed the alternator. Replacement alternator in place, correctly routed wiring, and the rev counter works perfectly. 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power |

I think it may be permanent live. I am currently doing a hybrid built, repurposing my old Disco trayback into a "defender" ute for farm use. I have to build my own wiring loom so have been checking and labling all wires. The alternator wiring on the engine is as it was on the Disco so is wired for tacho. When checking the 3 wire outlets I did find the one which was for the tacho to be a permanent live.

W terminal shouldnt produce a voltage when the engine is not running. It outputs a raw a.c. voltage proportional to engine speed with a rms voltage of 6-8v

Thanks for the replies so I’ve had it checked out and NO It’s not live until the ignition is turned on.

Looking for help with this please.
Ive fitted One and not having much luck getting it to read. Ive connected the Green to the Alt Terminal, Done with out removing the Alternator. Ive connected the Red to the Ign Live of the Temp Gauge Ive Connected the Earth the the Earth on the dash bulb Ive connected the Yellow to the Live of the Dash Bulb. When i Start the Engine, The Needle on the gauge sweeps, But sits back at zero. All the Dash Lights very faintly light up When i switch on the Lights all the lights and rev gauge comes on. When i switch off and on the lights with Ign on the gauge will sweep. Ive also fitted all Led light bulbs to my Cluster while it was out not sure if this would cause a problem. Looking for Suggestions please |
