Coolant issues

Hi all, I’m having a strange problem which is driving me nuts.

I fitted a new AMC head on my TD5. While doing it I put in a new water pump. Car starts and drives fine but the temp gauge is fluctuating.

It usually sits on the higher side. The strangest thing is it goes higher when I turn on the heater. The radiator stays cold along with the bottom pipe while the top gets hot but has no pressure.

I’ve tried bleeding it a couple of times with no success. I’ve taken out the thermostat and it works fine.

I’m a bit lost here now. Would love to hear if anyone has any ideas.

Use a infrared temp meter to check the block temp after some driving. With what you describe sound more like an electrical, most likely earthing issue.

I was thinking (hoping) it’s an electrical issue. I don’t want to pull the head again. Thanks for the idea, I’ll get on it.

Does the temp gauge always rise when you turn the heater on?

Yes every time. Some times it rises then drops a little but it’s always higher than when the heater is off

Could well be an earth issue. Mine was related to the earth post, in the seat box y the drivers seat .I ran a new cable from said earth post to chassis, cured my dancing temperature. Just use a jump lead to a good earth point, and check the earths. It’s pretty quick and simple.
