2011 Landrover 2.4 diesel TDCi not starting
Hi all, I am new to the forum so apologies if I mess this up.
I have a real problem as the car won't start now, here's some history. To date we have changed the following:-

1. Fuel filter WJI500040
2. PCM (ECU) NNN501630
3. Valve assembly (VCV) LR009837G
4. Crankshaft sensor LR004396
5. Camshaft sensor LR048186G
6. Injector function test x 4
7. Gasket LR004381LR
8. Fuel pump assembly LR010210LR


I collected the car in London and drove it home to Derby. The next day I tried to start it and it wouldn't work; then it did work.

After a day or so I decided to take it to the garage; when I dropped it off I went to start it again and it wouldn't. The first thing done was the bypass of the immobiliser (normally if the immobiliser is working and not coming off the car only turns over a few times, and you have to try again – that isn’t happening, it’ll turn and turn forever)

So we changed 1 and 2 above, and then not starting; so relays between the ECU and engine were changed (3 of them, simple 4 pin ones); car started.

Car ran; started and stopped several times; prepared then to take it for its MOT; it stopped on the way; hasn’t restarted yet.

So far we have focused on the cheaper fixes before jumping into mega-spend; so 4, 5 and 6 (they all passed the test); we did a no cost investigation where you took the injector electrical cables straight from the ECU to the injectors (which means looking at if the fault was in the wiring loom); still no start. Then changed 8. Pressure is now significantly better (high pressure squirting rather than more of an oozing flow). Still no start.

So does anyone have any magic wand or magic brain that can help us to resolve this; when it ran it ran brilliantly - we just get it going again Crying or Very sad

There is immense talent and knowledge on this forum and I'm sure someone will be along soon to help - from a non expert position, did you fill the fuel filter and then bleed the air out of the system?

Is it possible you've had a faulty vcv /crank position sensor to cause the intermittent fault and now it just needs bleeding through?

When you say you bypassed the immobiliser, what did you do?
The 10AS alarm module sends a signal to the engine ECU to allow it to start, without that signal the engine won’t start unless the immobiliser has been mapped out on the engine ECU. Also with the new ECU, did you pair it with the 10AS, this needs to be done to enable the engine to start.

Did you remove the instrument cluster (IPAC), disconnect the wiring connector, then without the cluster connected bridge pins 3 and 4 of the wiring connector and try to start the engine ? I say this as a cluster fault can stop the 10AS alarm communicating with the ECU.

If you have not done the above that’s the first thing to try, the next is to check the ignition switch which can also cause starting problems.

Do you have central locking? If so, change both remote batteries just to be sure - it’s quite a common occurrence that non starting is caused by flat remote batteries and for a few quid it’s worth doing annually. Even the new defenders fob batteries are flat in 8 months.

Does this not sound like a faulty ignition barrel ? I had similar a few years ago and it was all or nothing, sometimes it would even cut out whilst driving .

Yes it could well be ignition barrel, I had similar problems earlier this year, cured by replacing the barrel.
In fact my 2.4 130 has had two new ignition barrels in 117k miles.

Thanks everyone for your comments. There’s a couple in there that might help in getting to the bottom of this daunting issue.
I have also got high pressure ECU warnings. I’ll get the specifics later.
Final thing to throw into the mix is the clutch operation is very poor. Is there any way that the clutch power reduction switch is interfering with the starting?

They sound scary.
Note we’ve checked the injectors (off the vehicle) and they work to standard and we’ve popped a new injection pump on.

He has provided links to a transit forum for people with similar fault codes.

Ignition switch was one cause, damaged loom the other, but given defender ignition switches are a know issue I would replace that first, some good how too guides on here if you search. PS. You only need to replace the switch at the bottom of the ignition, not the whole ignition barrel.

Thanks everyone for your comments. We tried the ignition switch change but unfortunately without a positive result.
So we still have a vehicle that simply won’t start. We’ve thrown virtually everything at it but we must have missed something.
Any other thoughts from esteemed friends here would be gratefully received.

After more investigations, sending the immobiliser away (checked and found to be working) and changing 4xinjectors for Denso originals, the car is still not starting.

The fault codes still state issues on the HP side of the engine, bank 1 and bank 2.

We have changed all of the following

1. Fuel filter WJI500040
2. PCM (ECU) NNN501630
3. Valve assembly (VCV) LR009837G
4. Crankshaft sensor LR004396
5. Camshaft sensor LR048186G
6. Injector function test x 4, passed
7. Gasket LR004381LR
8. Fuel pump assembly LR010210LR
9. Ignition switch
10. Immobiliser system sent away, checked and stated as OK
11. Four new fuel injectors LR006803G

Any fresh ideas? Possible solutions?

So that seems to be the issue, have you checked the wires and connectors going into the sockets that the relays plug into ? Or any other of the fuses and earths etc that you may have disturbed when changing the relays ?

My thoughts are that something is not making contact properly, in changing the relays it made temp contact again, however with a few starts and vibration when driving it’s now not making contact.
