Pretty sure that is the 200tdi manifold/exhaust. The 300tdi has a 3 stud triangular flange that the down pipe mounts to. If I remember correctly the 200tdi downpipe also bolts to the engine block via a bracket midway down the frontpipe so it could be this that is stopping you from moving the exhaust into the correct position?

By the way, I guess this also means you have the 200tdi engine?

Thanks for the replies - I am still trying to get to the bottom of the story. The garage paperwork just says 'engine'!
Can I loosen off the bracket, loosen off these bolts, slot if back on and do everything up again? Does it need a bit of grease to create a seal? Cheers |

Can you share wider picture of the engine bay? Darren

200tdi had top mounted turbo on a Defender, similar setup as the 19J with exhaust above inlet manifold. Different from a 300.
Interesting the location of the EGT probe. Would that not be cooler after the turbo (expansion from turbine)? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

A quick scrabble around underneath to look at the other part of the exhaust reveals it isn't attached.

There is a triangular coupling further down the exhaust pipe. You might have to loosen the 3 bolts just enough so that you can lift the down pipe enough to connect to the turbo outlet pipe. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

they are always fun to get them to line up.
best way is on a ramp. with a proper downpipe clamp (new) loosen all the exhaust and work your way down from the front to the back aligning as you go . the downpipe bolts rarely line up on aftermarket exhausts |

Thanks - is this a relatively easy job? Also, that bottom part isn't bolted to anything so it's just going to rattle loose I think - are there specific bolts to re-attach this?
Thanks for taking the time to help. |

If anyone could help me out with the bolt sizes for re-attaching that would be great - I think they should be m10s? m10 50s?
Cheers |

That is the proper clamp, and looks in reasonable condition. Maybe just get a new bolt for it if the old one is suffering? |

Just looking at the engine bay pics and there's something wrong here. What year is the vehicle? That looks like a very original 200tdi engine bay installation, everything is in the correct 200tdi location, even the fuel filter on the bulkhead and the power steering bottle are different on a 300tdi. Also the fan cowling is very deep, suggesting that the gearbox is the LT77 from pre-300tdi (the 300tdi was sat much further forward, to make room for a longer R380 gearbox I believe).
Your car looks like it has always been a 200tdi so would not be a 1996 vehicle unless it has had an odd military past or been a LR factory vehicle before being registered? |
