Maybe the immobiliser?
I believe a flat battery in the remote (or it not there at all) will allow the engine to turn, catch and the give up. I have a feeling that the remote needs to be very close to the front . Also, I bout one of those all in one key/fob. I have to wait around 10 seconds before cranking otherwise the same happens. Good luck |

Have you got both keys in the cab at the same time? if so then this will block the vehicle starting - this happend when I went to sell my previous 110 - put both sets of keys on the same key ring and it confused the immobiliser ..
just a thought ... Poppy - TDCI (Puma) 110XS 2.2 - Camper conversion - see the build here - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56530.html Elgar -TDCI(Puma) 110XS Dormobile - now sold Devon & Cornwall 4x4 Response - DC126 |

Has the red alarm light been illuminated when the engine is running ? that’s a sure sign the fob battery is low.
First thing to do is change the fob battery, it’s easy to do, then resync the fob by pressing lock four times with the door closed, then unlock once. Then try the key with the fob attached to the key ring the key is attached to. If that does not solve the issue it could be the ignition switch, lots of topics on here re that failing and how to replace the switch element. I.e https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56773.html |

I don’t think it’s the 10AS alarm unit. It could be the instrument cluster (IPAC) , you can try the instrument cluster shunt, you remove the IPAC, remove the wiring connector to it, leave it unconnected and bridge pins 3 and 4 with a paper clip or equivalent size solid wire, and with the IPAC still disconnected and connector pins 3 and 4 bridged with a wire try and start the engine as normal.
See page 7 of this topic near bottom, post from Martin. https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic47486...p;start=90 This is the connector on the IPAC Click image to enlarge To release it Push down on tab (green arrow). This releases the latch which you swing across (orange arrow). Thank you so much for the information
I’ve read through the posts and it seems to make sense I also managed to start the car What I did was hold the fob against the 10as locked then unlocked And it started 🤷♂️ This could be just a coincidence but it indicates the problem is with the immobiliser I just don’t trust the car until I’ve found out what the problem is so a bit more investigation is required |

I agree, your issue does indicate there is an issue in the immobiliser circuit or components.
There is an antenna near the ignition switch that is connected to the 10AS, it is that antenna that communicates with the fob ( when it’s in close proximity to that antenna) to allow the fob code to be read and matched to the ones registered in the 10AS. There could be a bad connection there, so disconnecting the connectors to the 10AS , inspecting and cleaning with contact cleaner could be something to try. There could also be a bad connection in one of the connectors, so check each wire at a time to see if it’s loose. The 10AS then communicates with the engine ECU ( also known as the PCM- Powertrain Control Module) via the IPAC on the 2.4. The dry joints on the 2.4 IPAC circuit board where the IPAC connector is soldered are a know problem that can be intermittent so I’m more inclined to think it’s the IPAC, but worth checking the 10AS connectors first. Then next time it does not start, remove IPAC, bridge pins 3 and 4 and if it then starts you know it’s an IPAC issue. If not you have discounted the IPAC as the cause. |
