At the risk of high jacking this thread, I am also interested in this subject. On long runs to Spain I would like a higher drive - for comfort as much as fuel economy, the trouble is when I actually get there I go up and down steep windy roads when I suspect the higher drive (coupled with the slow gear change) may give me problems. A Roverdrive may be better for me but I have heard they are noisy?

Interesting Ibex,
I was also looking at going the remap route (God only knows where the dosh will come from.) Got to say that the SI has never left me looking for sixth with the fairey and at one time I was doing 1500 miles a month in it with lots of motorway journeys. The gearing seems spot on so hence my thoughts about an overdrive for the Td5. Also the fairey gives a higher top speed and it manages to slip over the legal quite easily the falling petrol gauge proves to be quite an inhibitor though. The follow on with this is also why have Ashcroft not developed one and are the current products as durable as the old fairey units? I fitted an ex disco transfer box to my 110 (1.2:1). goes really well now. It is "chipped" as well, which helps a lot, but in 5th on the motorway it's great.
And there's no worry of any overdrive breaking and leaving my stranded because no-one supports them anymore. |

i had the same thought process in 2001 and in the end went for an overdrive (GKN one) on a 90 td5.
why i live in a hilly area a did a fair bit of towing i was happy with the std gear range, it was only dual carriageways and motorways i wanted more. it leaves the option to increase tyre size and still be able to pull it. vehicle wasn't chipped. if it wasn't towing as much and lived in a flatter area and found i was not really using first gear then a 1.2 Box would of been the way fwd. for a cheaper option why not just change the whole T box for a disco one? they go for about £100. Hopefully my first post here can be of some help.
I just bought a 52 plate 90 County which is fitted with the GKN Overdrive. Before the drive back to Kent, 150 miles, I brimmed the tank and achieved 32.6mpg. 90% of the journey was at around 80 on motorways so the reduction in revs certainly has a positive effect on fuel consumption. It was also reasonably quiet unlike flat out in 5th which was much noisier. Certainly made the journey much more comfortable. It will work on 3rd, 4th and 5th but it only seems to make sense in 5th at higher speeds. Now I'm getting used to it I am changing in and out of OD at around 50 which makes the changes almost imperceptable. Over 50 and going into OD is OK but coming out is quite a jolt. It was not something I had on my wish list but I can see the positives and am pleasently pleased it has it. Not sure what they cost these days but mine was supplied and fitted in Jan 03 for £1100 and change. |

i always used the clutch to disengage mine except when under load, the latter will give a smooth change. i also found it useful it times for 3 + O/D when towing as you can change up without coming off the power. other than that it was primarily used as a 6th gear. IIRC they stopped making them some time ago - I know a few people had problems with them and couldn't get spares. I had one fitted to my old TD5 110 and it was great - it came with an 'ejector seat' button on the gear knob (well thats what I told the kids). Yes it does have the ejector seat button on the gear lever. It's actually a little too easy to switch when not required. It also stops me buying a couple of nice alloy gear knobs for my gear and transfer box lever. |

It is I, although the red one is my neighbour Richard. I sold the 50th back in Feb and missed it so much that I thought I would buy a new 90 and managed to pick up a Td5 90 CSW in Silver a couple of weeks ago. It was a frustrating search, missing some good ones but mostly looking at absolute rubbish that was way to expensive although they all seem to be expensive. Finally found the Silver one in a dealer in Warminster. Low mileage and Air Con so almost like the 50th except for the rattly engine and the big stick in the middle at the front |
