You may find that there is a general reluctance to answer that question since the answer would provide the knowledge required to power the BBUS independently from the vehicle, and hence remove it from a vehicle silently.

Thanks blackwolf but that would be some fiddly operation to do that!... I think there are easier and quicker methods of disabling the bbus than that!If you know which is the live and earth could you pm me!Like you i am wary of some people who post on here especially if they have nothing in the gallery and their story dont ring true. You could imagine the scroats joining here to find defender locations as we often give away lots of information of that nature even if its not direct.

Hi Nitram,
Have a look at pages 69 and 70 on this wiring diagram : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxMGNe75oMS3UWhTdU14eXJrWm8/view I think this diagram will be OK as I believe the BBUS has been the same in all Defenders. It looks like pin 2 is live and pin 4 is earth. Pins 1 and 3 go to the alarm ECU. Not sure which way round the pins are numbered though on the 4 pin connector on the BBUS unit. |

Anyone successfully replaced the batteries on the BBUS? I am not sure what the condition of mine are at over 10 years old. According to the LandRover security manual:
BATTERY BACKED UP SOUNDER (BBUS) This system is not fitted to all vehicles, but when fitted is mounted above the wheel arch liner on the drivers side. If the system is tampered with the BBUS will sound, and will only stop if the power is re-connected and the system armed and disarmed. It also sounds when the system is miss-locked. The battery life of the unit is around 3 years. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

As per the picture I included in an earlier reply to this thread, I struggled to get to the batteries as they are totally encased in a potted resin type material.
I tried to dismantle the BBUS after it failed. In the end I wasn't convinced that the batteries were the problem. Possibly the electronics or the sounder itself. |

The BBUS is designed so that it is impossible to remove the batteries without destroying the unit, which, in turn, means that the batteries cannot be replaced.
It was a sound policy right up to the moment when it became impossible to buy replacement units. It would be useful if some enterprising supplier started to market pin compatible, direct replacement BBUS units, it cannot be hard to do, there is very little in one of any complexity. |

Thank you for your replies.
As said, I do not know the condition of my BBUS, and my question is more towards a preventive maintenance, and avoid the batteries leaking and corroding the circuitry. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

I think all that can be done is to test the unit periodically and remove it when it stops working. Then either replace with a COTS solution or rely upon your other security layers.

It's still on my TODO list to figure out a plug in replacement. It's just a battery, logic and charging circuit and a siren. Not that difficult.

Does the 10AS complain if it is left disconnected? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

No. The 10AS doesn't know if it's there or not.
