England 2010 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Galway Green
Cost to retrofit aircon 2.4
I am in the market for a 110 and have found a couple of xs models to look at but also a low mileage county. It has half the miles of the xs models at a similar price but no aircon.
Just wondered what sort of cost to retrofit a/c to the 2.4 (ideally factory style spec) don't mind doing the work myself using new and used parts but wondered if anyone else had tackled it 2000 90 TD5,galv chassis, d2 axles ,Bas remap , alisport intercooler , d2 transfer box , side windows-more to come-much more!! *GONE*

What age are you looking at? The standard kit list for an xs usually includes a lot more than the county over and above the aircon.

The one I have seen is a 2008 but only has 65k miles. It already has electric windows and heated front screen but no a/c. I swore I would never buy another car without a/c after last summer ☀️ 2000 90 TD5,galv chassis, d2 axles ,Bas remap , alisport intercooler , d2 transfer box , side windows-more to come-much more!! *GONE*

I retrofitted several older cars with AC in the USA which is quite involved and tricky, mainly because of the open-heart surgery in both engine bay and dashboard it tends to involve.

There is a clearly a desire of certain establishments to imply AC is some sort of dark art that can only be addressed by "professionals" e.i. someone who read a book. Trust me it is not! The science is quite simple and the components and procedures are highly standardized with a lot of good information available on line. At least in the US the required tools are readily available to buy (the land of the free!)

Then there is the bleating about the environment which is also a little overstated by the uniformed. Most old AC systems are depleting by just used and time so there is the majority of your emissions. (again in the USA) you can get shops to empty and recover your system so you can work on it responsibly at home. Then you just pull a vac and re-gass yourself at home.

For the environmental impact R134a is not ozone depleting but the warming potential of R134a refrigerant is 1,410, meaning that the release of one gram of R134a would have the same global warming effect as releasing 1,410 grams of carbon dioxide. I always wondered, my defender emits about 290gr/km of CO2 so one charge of R134A (typ ~700gr) is the equivalent of 987kg of CO2 which would about 3525 km of driving, which most of us do without blinking an eye, or at least not particularly deemed criminal or something that should be avoided.

Now in Europe the establishment has managed to keep the AC conspiracy going and you find you cannot get the tools or the gas and you have to get ripped off by a 'professional' who is an 'expert' which altogether makes ACs not really a DIY proposition.

Can you report back on how you are liking the Puma as opposed to your TD5.

Later Defenders are much easier to find in good condition and the prices for Puma engine versions have fallen, certainly round here.

l've sold my TD5 110 but if l bought another it would likely be a later one.

It is a totally different animal to my old TD5.

Good points

Much quieter
better on fuel
Better low down torque
Heater is superb
extra gear
More extras (air con, abs/tc, heated seats, heated screen, alarm etc.)
Better more secure seats in rear

Bad points

Not got the Audi Quattro howl my td5 had
less outright power. and not as tuneable
is bog standard (at the moment) Cool
Gearbox is still a bit agricultural and cannot be rushed like the R380 in my Td5
Engine sounds a bit clattery especially when pulling

When I was looking I found that low mile late TD5s were fetching as much or more than early pumas 2000 90 TD5,galv chassis, d2 axles ,Bas remap , alisport intercooler , d2 transfer box , side windows-more to come-much more!! *GONE*
