Not starting
My defender would not start today. It’s a 2009 with 57000 on clock.
It turned over ok I checked the 3 fuses for the ecu all ok.
Am I right in thinking it is somewhere in the fuel system. Are there easy steps to enable me to eliminate peers of the system.
I do not have a diagnostic tool, also do not have a laptop, using an iPad to write this.
I would also likely to buy a diagnostic tool what do you recommend.

Get an wifi obd2 reader, such as an ELM327, and install an obd2 app on your ipad. Very handy to have, read and reset error codes.
Being a 2.4, you may also use Forscan app. Check appstore on ipad. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Does it usually start easily, any changes in how it starts recently? Does it start better in the summer than the winter? Does it take an extra turn of the engine in the winter before it catches? Was it cold today where you are?

Is it on the original glow plugs? Is it on the original battery, if not how old is the replacement, are the battery terminals clean and tight? Do you get smoke out the exhaust even though it doesn't start? Does everything else work, radio, dash lights, windows etc? Any weird smells?

Non starting could be loads of things or multiple loads of things!

Andy It has the original battery and glow plugs.
I have eventually got it going. It was like it tried to start and eventually started running.
It was above freezing today.
The battery did turn it over at the normal rate I think.

So the car is working fine which is good news. I'm no expert other than having a similar problem just before Christmas. That turned out to be the glow plugs not working but that knackered the starter motor which blew the mega fuse. Starting went from problematic to totally fudged in about a week.

You can check some of the glow plug system easily, see if you can hear the glow plug relay working when you turn the ignition on. The relay is under the drivers seat so you might have to open the box to hear it, you can hear it click off after the glow plugs have been on for a few seconds. There are lots of multimeter tests you can do to check the wiring to the plugs which I didn't bother with. The Haynes Manual basically says if you suspect the glow plugs aren't working replace them.

Also, there are some big fuses under the drivers seat that are for the plugs, you can check them while you're there. I asked about them a while ago.

Keep an eye on battery voltages at rest and when running, the voltage shouldn’t go low by itself too rapidly and voltage should be appropriate with engine running and alternator charging current.

Parasitic drain can be a common cause, so might be worth checking milliamp current draw at rest.
Also if you have a battery charger, use it just for now and if the issues stop because of keeping the battery charged you can likely say there parasitic drain or the battery is duff.
I wouldn’t be too quick to replace out a battery, parasitic drain is more common than battery failure imo.

I had it a few weeks ago, wet on the interior light tracks was causing a drain at rest.
You’d only know by removing the interior light to check.
The cause was condensation build up generally due to the weather.

Other things such as a relay coil energised at rest by incorrect wiring or similar scenario can be another culprit.
Check battery clamps are tight and main earth lead also.

The relays under the seat are different to the photos Andy referenced. Also do not match with LRW or Haynes manual.

Is this a modified area?

Thanks Andy I have power to the glowplug rail.
So I suppose next step will be to look at the glowplugs.

I used the landrover yesterday it started and ran OK.
But it was about 8 degrees yesterday.

When you turn the key the glow plugs warm up for a few seconds and the coil light on the dash goes out. You then turn the key, the engine starts and idles. The glow plugs go into their "after glow" phase (I don't know if that's what it's actually called) where they're still on to help generate heat for a cleaner burn while the combustion chamber warms up.

The After Glow phase lasts for about 30 second. So if you cold start the car, let it idle and it ticks over nicely then at ~30 seconds starts to rough idle your glow plugs are working. If you start it and it rough idles straight away and there's no change at 30 second the glow plugs are fudged.

That's a nice way to check, you don't have to do anything except sit still and listen.

Andy yes you must be right. I got a mate to hold the meter.
When the coil symbol was light I had power to the rail
and when it went out it was still powered for a while.

Steve mentioned battery voltage which was 12.6 and when the engine is started it went to about 14 plus volts.

But this morning was somewhere about zero plus or minus a degree. The landy started easy.
