Read tub repair panels
Are these the correct panels https://yrmit.co.uk/product/end-cap-betwee...or-3-door/ to replace these panels circled?

No they aren’t the correct ones, they go infront of the rear wheel arch underneath the tub

Couldn’t actually see the pets you’re after on YRM’s website, but was looking quickly

They are available from other suppliers but don’t know of the quality

Remember they are sides so will need different panels for each side -the one in the link is for the RH side

Cheers Jimbo I had spotted they are handed.

My plan would be buy the panels, prime and paint the hidden areas, fix in place and then send in for paint and they spray the new door and panels to match.

Anyone done the job and care to share hints and tips? 1999 Defender TD5 110

I did replaced one of these on my 110 albeit with the tub off the chassis. It was actually surprisingly easy to do. Just a few spot welds to drill out (buy a proper spot weld drill) and the new OEM one slotted back in nicely. I have just used Tigerseal to stick the new one back on.

Only think i cant recall is if there are any spot welds which are obscured by the top capping. I dont think there are. You will need to take the corner capping off though.

Cheers,

Thanks Steve for the info. The panel is ally I think so no spot welds?
Makes it a bit more awkward having to remove the capping as that means removing a few rivets and lifting the upper body up.

I think my capping's are all one section ? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Most likely is that Steve is referring to the vertical corner capping, where the brake and indicator lights fit. You will have to remove that anyway, as there are spot welds joining the rear quarter panels to the side panels of the tub.
Underneath the horizontal capping there are pop rivets, that rivet the capping to the quarter panel. Perhaps to can grind the rivet from underneath the capping, but how to install new rivets without taking the hard top side panels off, although IIRC there are only 2 pop rivets there, so how much mechanical integrity are they giving to the structure! Can always use some good polyurethane glue for bonding.

You probably have to remove the bracket that bolts the tub to the rear cross member when offering the new panel in under the horizontal capping.

Then how to replace the original spot welds. Many use pop rivets, which in my opinion are unsightly. I would be tempted to just use good quality polyurethane glue. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Indeed, Dinnu is right - i was referring the removing the vertical capping.

I have added a few pics below which might help (note my tub is upside down here). You can see on the old panel where the spot welds have been drilled out.

Thanks Dinnu.
I have had the vertical cappings off before, drill out the rivets and remove. Fitting the reverse way.
The brackets that mount to the x-member on mine are not removable.

Steve.
Cheers for the pics.

The bottom picture of the upside down black panel - the two holes close together are these the holes that the bolts go through for the body to x-member bolts? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Thanks Lars. I think I need to do some inspection of the current panel.
Is there a lip between the capping and body that the panel sits in? 1999 Defender TD5 110

On closer inspection, I can see the indentations of the spot weld and that the panel goes under the capping. Maybe if the x-member tub mounting tabs were on the inside of the panel it might be doable without removing the capping.

The small angle metal bit of metal either side of the door that I think would have been for a tailgate antiluce would this be removable without removing the capping? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Yes, those small steel bits can be removed easily after drilling the rivets out. They slide down and out. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
