Wipers won't turn off?
Not sure if it was related to the -6 start this morning. But turned on the wipers and now they won't turn off. The fast and intermittent settings still work though which seems odd?

Also the rear wiper has stopped working at the same time! (checked fuse which is fine)

It might not be this, but there are two things I would look at. (Depending on the age of your car).

First would be the wiper relay. For my car - 1994 Tdi, I think it’s in the fuse panel in front of the gear levers. I guess it’s possible the cold might have affected this.

The other would maybe be the park switch inside the (front) motor. It’s a white nylon thing with a ‘ramp’ which stops/parks the wipers in the right place. It’s possible that the cold could have affected this, or it’s just the standard Defender bloody-mindedness!

The park switch obviously wouldn’t affect the rear wiper - the relay might. I’d need to look at the wiring diagram to see if they were on the same relay. Donald

Thanks donmacn. Mines a 2011 Puma, I'll see if I can find a wiring diagram.

Firstly: coincidence with the front and rear systems, they have no connection to each other.

I think front issue is likely to be the park switch stuck, so it is sending out 12V constantly on its brown/light green output wire.

The "relay" isn't a relay for any standard wiper function, it's a timer for the intermittent function (also it starts the wiper when you wash the screen).

If you want to eliminate the timer as a potential source, you can remove it and bridge pins 5 and 2 (5 = brown/light green park switch output from wiper, 2 = yellow and light green wiper motor drive output to column switch)

Rear, I know you have but check fuse 11 which is the rear wiper fuse - actually does your rear washer pump work? (it's on the same fuse)

Otherwise some poking around with a multimeter will be required on the 6 pin tailgate connector or behind the tailgate trim. There is a relay on the rear door, which is triggered by an earth being applied to the black/green wire from the rear wiper button.

I had issues with wipers parking and it was the relay at fault. I only checked this after going through the fiddle of changing the park switch. I would definitely check the relay first. My vehicle is 2010 and the relay is the middle one of the top row of three in the fuse box in front of driver.

Thanks guys. Had a quick play again and rear wiper is working. Dodgy connection! So maybe that hasn't worked for a while and I've only just noticed!

Did just notice as well if I hold the wiper indicator stalk just up a fraction from the off position it stops them (not parks them just stops them in whatever position they are in). Not sure if thats normal? If not could this suggest an issue with the stalk itself or still pointing to either a relay or park switch issue?

Moving the stalk fractionally disconnects the feed to the the park switch in order to allow the "flick" (one wipe) function, it does not necessarily indicate a malfunction.

It is almost certain that your park switch has stuck and is not grounding the motor at the appropriate moment. It is possible that the grease in the motor gearbox has stiffened up with the cold and is enough to cause the problem.

Thanks all, it was the park switch. Not too bad a job to replace.

Went to drive it again a week later and issue has returned! Surely the park switch can't be faulty already!

Next option will be to change the wiper stalk at the steering wheel. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Thanks, will have to get one ordered and give that a go. Its strange how replacing the park switched resolved it just after I replaced it and then didn't a week later!

On our 2008 Puma the very fast speed action would not work. Don't use it much but I was concerned the tester on the annual road worthiness test thing would try it then fail me. I bought a new stalk but it turned out to be a problem with the motor. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

The different speeds work fine on mine. It just won't stop with the stalk in the off position.
