My 2002 TD5 Disco2 is on its third at 220k, the first lasted for about 18k, the second (which was second-hand and a false economy) didn't last long at all, and the third (which was new OEM) is OK at the moment, but is of curse a youngster.
I found with both the failed ones that it was the vacuum pump leaking oil into the alternator, where it forms an oily grinding paste gunk, that killed the alternator. Both could in theory be overhauled, but I couldn't find replacement slip rings for that particular alternator on sale anywhere in the world. Just about every other alternator, but not that one. I have seriously considered replacing the alternator-mounted vac pump with a modern electric one. |

Not sure if you have bought a new alternator yet, or if you have whether you have fitted it, but...
Paddocks are doing 10% off Denso TD5 alternators/pumps: https://www.paddockspares.com/alternator-a...-oe-1.html Might or might not be useful |

I dropped the alternator off at the local autosparks and they think its fixable. Parts on back order, so hopefully in the new year. Cost suggested £60.... lets see. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I would keep it as a spare and put it somewhere save in the Defender.
My experience is that I never break parts that I have with me as spares. Roel 1984 90 2.5 na Diesel - RR V8 (1994-2001) 1997 Camel Trophy Discovery 300TDI (2001-2009) 2005 G4 Discovery III 4.4 V8 (2008-2018) It's gone but it still hurts. 2003 90 Td5 (2009-now) |
