Another dead alternator
Alternator packed in again. Old one lasted from July 2020 to this weekend Sad

New alty to be ordered on order.

The suggestion from Mrs Excossack was, is it due to the extra batteries I have that are charged via a simple relay split charger setup

Do I need a more advanced one?
I did look at this type https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331147338969 which looks like heavy duty relay and a pair of volt meters.

Or is it just pot luck?

No oil leaking from the current (no pun) alternator.

Why do they die? 1999 Defender TD5 110

What has died in alternator?
More batteries is not a problem. Compare charging current with current used by a winch.
I have the same simple system for two batteries. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Alternator is outputting 12.1v or there abouts Sad
I did get a brief 5 mins or so charging but soon returned to battery not charging warning light. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Is it only ever charging at 12.1v?

Miffy's will vary between 12.4-14v depending on battery condition and use. What I have noticed is that since fitting LED lights the amount of charge being supplied by the alternator has been much much lower than with all filament and halogen bulbs were fitted.

The only time the alternator really kicks out voltage is when the Waeco fridge is being used or the winch.

Just wondering if since fitting the LED lights the vehicle is now more electrically efficient...

Might be worth taking the alternator to be tested, someone like this - https://www.alternatorsnorthwest.com - Never used them but might be worth giving them or someone closer to you a call.

Previously the voltage has been 13.x Volts upto 14.3 Volts or thereabouts
But with the battery warning light being on and the head lights getting dim....something was not happy.

We have a auto spark place up the road from me who I have used before.

Now I have two dead alternators. I might take one apart for a look. 1999 Defender TD5 110

It is odd.
It could be previous oil leaks getting in to the alternator, it could be unlucky. Denso is the make I have used. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Huh a Denso... Best manufacturer by far. Weird. I would take it apart and have a look. See if it is just oil contamination.

Alty arrived this morning, and I had a 1 hr gap for lunch before another meeting.
55mins later all back together and normal volts resumed. Smile 1999 Defender TD5 110

I’d be interested to know why the alternator failed if you end up taking it apart.

I had to replace mine the other day. Granted it was 16 years old but the engines only done 50,000.

Is it just the 4 bolts holding the vacuum pump to the alternator? I have a look at mine later.

I think its 4 screws/bolts holding the vac pump in place. 1999 Defender TD5 110

There are 3 parts - regulator, - bushes in holder and - rectifier block. Lot if time the bushes are worn, but it is possible to buy them. And it is cheap. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Mine's on 146,000 and still the original alternator.

But the one on our 90 failed at 104,000.
