Hi Blackwolf thanks for the input.

If I am getting readings from all the sensors i.e crank, rail pressure, MAF etc would those reading run through the ECU and then to the OBD? Suggesting as I have all those readings that the ECU is OK?

Just thinking outside the box...how can i test the pump pressure without the ECU interfering and possibly causing the low pressure?

Is it possible to apply 12 volts directly to the VCM to open it giving maximum flow of fuel to the pump and thus meaning a low pressure reading must be the pump? I know there is a risk that it could over pressurise and blow the Relief Valve?

I'm afraid I don't know how the ECM actually modulates the VCV, so I don't know if what you propose is viable. As far as I recall there are only two wires connected to the VCV so my guess would be that its a PWM signal. It would, I suppose, be easy enough to apply a 12V signal to the VCV and crank the engine.

Do you have any way to see if the signal from the ECM is reaching the VCV? An open circuit in the harness might prevent the engine from starting.

An ECM fault would not necessarily affect all aspects of the ECM's operation so that fact that it is reporting valid sensor data does not necessarily rule it out.

Have you replaced the fuel rail pressure relief valve (you don't list it in your recent post)? This is a non-resetting valve which must me replaced if it "pops", is there any chance it has done so?

Morning,

Sorry forgot to say, yes I replaced the Relief Valve, copper seal and torqued to the correct amount.

The issue I have is that the engine has done extremely high miles at 280,000 miles. The last owner who had it from new was insistent that it was on the original engine.

I am loathed to go about changing the diesel pump, timing chain etc on an engine that really has gone well to get that far.

It was running extremely well before it conked out however.

I will look at getting a decent low mileage replacement engine rather than dealv into that one.

The issue will be one finding one that I believe to have the claimed miles on it. They all seem to say 40,50k etc.

No doubt i will then find out its the ECM/ECU.

Thanks for all your help.
