Not me but my daughter. She was out attending to her pony before she headed off the work placement in a hospital. She said she was unable to close the door on the 90 300 tdi as it froze stuck when she did! She closed it while driving.

15-50 quid for an angle grinder..........save you money on garage fees!
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Grinder-CHANTPOWE...&psc=1 an open wallet and an angle grinder and a big big hammer are the holy trinity of tools for defender ownership! |

Problem is I think the angle grinder is a no-go due to it being such a tight space in there.
The Def is going into a garage near the end of the year anyway so may have to ask them to use their expertise to get the out and just fit the kit for me (in case there are any other mother hubbards waiting in the wings!). 2003 90 TD5 Hardtop |

You could possibly try a nut splitter? That way you may save the bolt and avoid dropping the tank. Darren

Nut splitter might work! Could you not just move the exhaust to one side to make room for a power tool

So I was researching more about the installation of this Safari Equip 2” receiver. Most pictures I found were for installing onto a 110, but I have a 90, which comes with different cross member > chassis attachments. Anyway, I finally found a photo from 2013 that showed me exactly where I needed to mount the attachments… turns out I didn’t need to remove the lashing points after all as the chassis side mounts further down. 😬
So I’m continuing on with it. I’ve already snapped a head, so that’s fun. I’m now stuck on removing these two top bolts. I’ve undone them but is there a nut behind that I’m supposed to grab onto with a spanner or socket? Because I see no way of getting in there. I could just be being thick though, and not seeing the obvious. Click image to enlarge 2003 90 TD5 Hardtop |

I am rather assuming that you haven't undone them or you wouldn't be asking the question! TD5 and TDCi Defenders have threaded inserts in the rear cross-member for these setscrews and as a result if they are spinning, then I'm afraid you have a problem. The usual solution is to cut them off, then open up the rear crossmember and weld in good new material with captive nuts or new threaded inserts. There is very little else you can do. Remember also that these are rather significant parts of your towing attachment and having found out that you have a corrosion issue inside the cross-member I would give serious thought before towing anything before it is resolved. There was a thread on the forum, I think within the last year, where someone had this problem and cut open and repaired these fasteners. Last edited by blackwolf on 15th Dec 2022 1:39pm. Yeah, sorry, I can see how that was a bit misleading!
Well isn’t that just pants. I’ve been all excited about getting this piece of equipment, that it’s a kick in the corroded nuts when a setback like this happens. I guess I’ll put everything back together to keep things from banging about and speak to my usual Landy specialist. Thank you for your input. It is much appreciated, albeit a bit of a downer. I’ll try to locate that thread you mentioned. 2003 90 TD5 Hardtop |

Yes, and I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. The earlier chassis which had though-bolts were more satisfactory, but the fuel tank precluded that approach on the later ones. Your receiver hitch will also use the bolt-holes (again with threaded inserts) that go upwards into the cross-member, so the upside is that these can be made good at the same time.
it's not a hard job for someone wit the welding skills, and your Defender will be better and stronger afterwards, but it is still a real bummer when you want the gratification of fitting your cool new accessory. You have my sympathy, welcome to the world of Defender-ownership! |
