Escort them to Holyhead put them on a ferry, send their transits to crusher, cancel their right to enter UK for life.
Then again we could sit in a circle hold hands and discuss the theiving sods human rights. If however they are found to be UK citizens then I suggest they should be made to spend 3 months as porters at Brize Norton carrying the bags of returning forces and polishing their boots. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper |

whilst out walking in the Peak I can't get over the number of aircraft crash memorials which have been distroyed and not for there scrap value, as you know most of these are well away from roads so it's not 'fed up kids'

I was appalled/enraged to hear that very recently the 4' tall bronze statue of a soldier has been stolen from the war memorial outside the Royal British Legion in Tidworth. It was insured for £10k (what it cost when put up) which is far more than its intrinsic value and far less than the replacement cost. The theft is made more insulting by the proximity to Remembrance Day. The thieves were caught (just) on CCTV from an adjacent property, and apparently the theft took something like 40 minutes.
I think it is a shame that no-one caught them in the act. Tidworth is a garrison town with a very large population of serving military personnel, and I am sure that had the thieves been detained they may have found that their lifestyle choice proved painful. No doubt they would have attempted to make good their escape, and been detained using entirely reasonable and appropriate force. I cannot actually find the words adequately to describe my feelings towards metal thieves. Being heavily involved in steam restoration, it angers me beyond words that a mindless thug can in minutes render a viable restoration completely uneconomic. As for those who steal war memorials, lead off church roofs, that sort of thing, or risk lives by stealing manhole covers etc, then my view is that if they choose to live outside society's rules they should be afforeded no protection under those rules. With far too many people on the planet anyway (7 billion now), I would advocate that publicly stoning them to death as an effective disincentive to others who might be tempted would be appropriate. On a more pragmatic note, the problem could be virtually eliminated by effective regulation of scrap metal dealers (can you imagine walking into a scrappy with a 4' bronze statue of a soldier, clearly from a war memorial - there is no way on earth that the bloke could think it is legit). The public want it, the police want it (something like 60% of rural crime now involves metal theft) and the legit metal dealers want it. So why won't our idiot politicians do anything? Cable theft from the railways reportedly costs the UK economy (that's you and me in effect ) £1 billion per annum (although since this figure was reported in the Guardian it could be wrong)! Crime involving metal theft is up between 50% and 75% almost everywhere in the UK this year compared to last. Metal theft is currently being cited as the biggest threat to conservation. There is an online government petition to make it illegal to carry out cash-based transactions in the sale or purchase of scrap metal. By doing this, an audit trail would be created which would probably eliminate much of the problem. The petition has received widespread support from the heritage railway community, as well as others affected by this despicable crime. Please sign it if you support it. Signed too.
If this was passed, I'd love to see the faces of those who take part in this type of crime. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion. |
