2010 build XS: False Traction Control warning in wet weather
Hello,
Traction control and heated rear window both work normally.
Ottons (as was) made a small mod to the wiring for the 3rd stop light saying that it was something they always do.

If, when driving in wet weather, I switch on the heated rear window the traction control warning light comes on and stays on until I shut down and restart. There is no sign that TC is working at this point.
If I switch on the HRW before driving off the TC warning light does not come on.
In dry weather turning on the HRW whilst driving does not cause the warning light to come on.

Does someone in the community know how to fix my snag?

Thanks,
PeeWee

Do you have any detail of the wiring mod? I've never heard of the need for anything like that before Confused Darren

I think that as built the 3rd stop light earths through the HRW but the mod is to add a short length of wire, in the rubber window seal, from the 3rd stop to the earth tag on the HRW thus ensuring an earth path if the filaments degrade.
I mentioned the mod not because I suspect that my problem is caused by it, but for “completeness”. I’ll try contacting the Service Advisor about it, even if it was six or seven years ago!

Thanks,
Peter

Ah, ok. It's difficult to imagine how that might impact your TC system, to be honest. I can only think it's some sort of earth fault but it's a bit obscure. Perhaps try disconnecting the brake light and see if that changes the behaviour? That would at least prove, or not, a connection between the two. Darren

When you say 2010 build is it a 2010 model year or a late 2010 calendar year build and so a 2011 model year? Does it have the WABCO ECU under the driver's seat (2010) or not (2011)?

Last eight characters of the VIN for a 2010 are AA123456, for 2011 BA123456 (the numbers are an example).

I would remove the brake light bulb from the 3rd brake light and try it again.

I think what might be happening you have a poor earth to the rear window, and turning on the HRW is causing a voltage to appear on the brake light supply.

I think this suggests you have a 2011 model with the Bosch ABS system - the brake light supply is connected to the ABS modulator on the Bosch system but not with the WABCO.

The ABS ECU sees a "brake pedal on" signal, but no corresponding rise in pedal pressure. So it throws an error.

Maybe!

Try without the 3rd brake light bulb and report back Smile  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Martin,

Thanks for that.
I won't go out into the fresh air just yet,
but I know that the build was sometime in August 2010,
the sequence is BA799xxx,
it was supplied as 2011 MY.

I'll let you know more when the sun has melted the frost!

OK, as it's a 2011 the brake switch signal feedback seems the likely problem Thumbs Up

If it is, then need to test how good the earth is to the rear door/window Thumbs Up  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
