Thermostat and rad bleed plug 300tdi

Hello,

I need to replace my thermostat because my engine isn't getting up to temp. Stupidly, I didn't read a how to first which said I needed new bleed plugs and don't really want to pay shipping for two of the plastic ones. I know there is the x-eng plugs but they seem a bit steep at £9 and I would rather like to do this today. I have read of people using 1/2 rad plugs but it isn't clear how they seal in the hole.

Will this (https://www.screwfix.com/p/flomasta-male-flanged-plug-x/98635) be alright and do I just put ptfe or an o-ring on? Or do I give in and but the x-eng ones?

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I have done hours of reading and no one seems to detail how to seal a rad plug.

I am no expert and no mechanic so please bear that in mind when you read this response.

I use ptfe tape on many things that have a thread. I do it for two reasons - firstly to seal the thread and second to stop threads binding.

You need to be careful when you take them out as the tape can come off and drop I to what you are taking them out of.

I have seen one thread where they used a rad plug that had the bleed screw. I have never done this but when I saw it I thought what a good idea!

Once upon a time I used a brass radiator plu here (thermostat housing). Worked fine - and it would get you out of a jam temporarily - but when the time came for me to remove it, it had 'bonded' itself solidly to the thermostat housing and was a real pain to remove.

That said, even the plastic ones can be a pain to remove if they've been left in too long. Donald

Getting the plastic one out of mine was very difficult. I had to butcher it to remove it and I wouldn't fit another. I can't remember if the brass one had a rubber O ring or not?

If the brass ones also bind, the next time I remove it I will refit using ptfe tape.

Been using the X-Eng ones for getting on for 14-years now and find them ideal.
No 0-rings, I have always just used PTFE tape and never had an issue.
