United Kingdom 2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 HCPU Fuji White
2.2tdci Traction warning light + grating sound
Hi all, I had a quick search into traction control warning lights but I'm likely not being specific so thought I'd ask. I apologies now if it's been covered before and I've missed it, I'll continue a search but if someone has a link that would be excellent too.

The vehicle is a 2013 110 HCPU 2.2tdci. The symptom is that the TC warning light has flickered combined with a grating whirring sound that lasts seconds then all is well. The sound is almost like static white noise.

It's happened a few times now but totally at random, generally not long after starting from cold, it's done it once in reverse but generally first gear and pulling away from a junction. It's not from wheel spinning or fast starts just normal driving. It could be oil on the road, but I don't think so. The first time it did it I hadn't seen the warning light just the noise and thought it came from elsewhere, a few days later pulling out of a car parking space. I'm used to TC kicking in on other vehicles but there isn't the noise. My 300tdi doesn't have TC so it's unfamiliar to me.

Is it a sensor that's possibly on its way out or something else? I've not yet had to delve too deep into the workings of this vehicle as I've only had it a year and it's been spot on as my daily work vehicle.

Many Thanks Matt 300tdi 90 CSW

The noise is most likely the ABS modulator activating for the TC, Landrover's implementation always makes a hard-to-describe noise which could well fit your description. Assuming that there isn't a genuine need for the TC to kick in, it is most likely that there is a faulty sensor in one of the hubs, or for some reason the signal from one of the sensors is being degraded so that the TC thinks that one wheel is rolling at the wrong speed and is intervening.

I diagnostic tool is really the only way to get to the bottom of this and establish which sensor it is.

The real fun starts, as I found once with my Disco2, when a faulty front wheel sensor tells the ECU that a wheel is spinning when it isn't, and the TC then jams one front brake hard on at speed. This is quite disconcerting!

Thank you for the reply, I very much hope never to have random braking at any kind of speed Shocked

Is there a recommended diagnostic tool to try to establish the sensor fault? It's not something I've had to consider before, but one might be pretty useful given that there are so many electronic systems on this vehicle. I'd normally avoid anything budget and opt for the middle or better but I've no idea. Maybe time for a little research.

Many Thanks

The most popular (due to being a good balance of cost versus capability) are the Nanocom and the GAP IID Tool.

There are many threads on the subject of each, and it is hard to say (and incredibly subjective) whether either is "better" than the other, both have pros and cons.

Other diagnostic tools are available, however the "generic" OBD tools usually don't really do enough LR-specific stuff to be much use.

Just go back a step first. It's been wet, pull all the loom connectors where the sensors attach. Clean them up and see if any progress made. Cheers

I'd seen these 2 options crop up quite a few times, what they do is still all way above my head at the moment. Plenty of reading to do Thumbs Up

Justifying the expense of a diagnostic tool plus than my own capability to fix the issue, whatever it may be, will be the other consideration vs taking it to my mechanic and handing over the keys. 300tdi 90 CSW

I think it's about time I became more acquainted to my vehicle's electronics and sensors so hopefully it is a dry weekend to make a start. Thank you for your reply. M 300tdi 90 CSW

I'm just reading the Haynes Manual on the braking system and now I'm wondering if a low battery voltage which I know I had as I've just replaced the battery would account for the symptom. I will still investigate the connections and ponder further. 300tdi 90 CSW
