I've lived with a transmission whine in the higher gears for a couple of years (sorry, I'm one of those who believes that if a whine/rumble/noise could come from one of several sources, rather than change this, then that, then the other, wait until the damn thing beaks then you'll KNOW the cause!)
Mine even got noisier on long curves or bends, so I was fearing a big bill. Last month I fitted new tyres for the truck's MOT, it's now quieter than it's ever been. Just a thought... Peter |

Mine has always whined from new when at cruising speeds, to me it’s just one of those land rover niggles 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

Yeah it might be that I'll have to learn to live with it until something breaks.
Doesn't seem to be the tires though, as the noise is equal in 6th gear low range at ~40kph and 6th gear high range at 100-110kph |

Id speak to Ashtranz on this forum.
It could be a bearing on the way out. Failure may destroy the whole gearbox. Have you drained the gearbox oil through a cloth and over a magnet to see what metal is in it? DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

My 2007MY 110" had a loud whine in 6th from new. After a short while the dealer repleced both, the transfer case and gearbox due to other issues, by reman units. So brand new gearboxes can have mesh problems. Puma 110" SW

That "whine" is probably the Mrs telling you to keep an eye on your speed.... 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Thanks for all the replies. Here's a short video I recorded today with the whine in all it's glory. I hope it helps you understand what I'm talking about:
This was recorded in low range. The same whine happens in high range, but obviously at much higher speeds. Have you heard something similar? Any idea of the cause? Is it okay to "let it break" or should I intervene right away? Thanks again. |

Yes! Both the gearbox and transfer box oils were just replaced. There were no signs of debris in the old, discarded oils, but I cannot be sure that there wasn’t damage in the past. As I explained in the first post, this Defender is a recent purchase.

The maingear box must not have more than 2.2 litres of oil put into it. As it is on a slope it will hold more than this if the filler plug is used as the oil level. Land Rover say than over filling can cause the gearbox to over heat and damage it.
Only the correct specification oil to GL4 must be used. If GL5 is used Land Rover say that it will react with some of the components in the gearbox and damage them. So if in the past your Land Rover has had the main gearbox over filled and GL5 specification oil used, it could have been damaged. Get the main gearbox oil level checked. If it is to the filler plug level, drain it and refill with 2.2 litres of GL4 specification oil. Yeah, have to agree it was a but of a strange noise...
BUT, do you often rev to more than 3,000 for long periods? I certainly don't, even on a motorway in 6th any increase in speed by thrashing the truck above 2,500 revs is pointless when I have to re-fuel that much sooner. Personally, I'd go along with what's been previously suggested, namely drain and refill the gear- and transfer boxes with the correct amount of good quality oil of the correct specification. And then drive it until whatever is causing the noise finally gives up the ghost. It could even be something like a loosely-fitting roller bearing cage which could, despite being noisy, outlive the whole vehicle. Perhaps I'm biased, but every time a garage fix HASN'T worked ("Oh it wasn't the relay as we thought, we'll have to try changing the ..."), they haven't offered to re-fit the non-faulty part and refund my money! Furthermore, I would use a 85w140 ( or straight 140 if exists) oil in the transfer case and test. If noise level is still there then the source of the noise is clear. Puma 110" SW

Are the 5th and 6th on the MT82 to the front of the gearbox? Thats what I am understanding from the diagrams. If noise is predominantly from 5th and 6th, then it suggests a bearing close to those gears? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
