No fault was found in the gearbox. Gears and bearings look perfect. We put it back in the car, put the right oil in and the noise is still there, in all its glory. We now got a used gearbox + transfer box combo to test in the car. We'll start with the transfer box and if it doesn't change things, swap the gearbox as well.
We'll find the gremlin sooner or later. |

Fyi, I had a ‘whine’ for as long as I had the MY88 90.
Only recently found that the whine was coming from the shoes gently pushing sideways against the handbrake drum. Was caused my a bolt from the adjuster coming off. But later handbrake mechanism is different from earlier design. But just a thought. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Thanks for your suggestion, Dinnu! We are thinking it’s something in the transfer case or before it because the noise happens similarly in low range and long range, in 4th, 5th and 6th gears. If it were something in the handbrake or beyond it, it would be proportional to the speed of the car.

Do you get it with the transfer box in neutral and moving up through the gears?

No. With the transfer case in neutral the whine doesn’t appear. We don’t know whether that’s because the problem is in the transfer case or simply because there’s no significant torque applied to the gears and bearings when we run the gearbox that way. We’ll find out when we swap out the transfer case with a used one soon.

The most common source of a mid-vehicle transmission whine is the small taper-roller bearings on the transfer box intermediate shaft, but it is hard to explain why you're only getting it in 5th and 6th in that case.
(Edited to correct needle-roller bearings to taper-roller bearings - they haven't been needle-rollers since Series days). Last edited by blackwolf on 14th Nov 2022 10:22am. Edited 1 time in total |

Thanks, blackwolf! We inspected the transfer box before and replaced two bad bearings, although not that one specifically. We’ll now swap the box completely with a used one to see if the whine disappears. If so, we’ll probably inspect the original one again. I’ll post the findings.

Hi all
I’ll wait for the gearbox experts to shoot me down but a few years ago I had a noisy R380 box on a 300Tdi 90. I changed the oil (which was in good order) and refilled with new oil that was well over engineered for the box. The whine remained. I mentioned the whine to a chap who ran his own garage and he suggested a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix. Now I thought that this was only for automatics but gave it a try anyway. Whine disappeared and the gear change improved no end. Ran the Landy for another 2 years without problem and in relative silence… Jim |

PLOT TWIST
As I said before, we found a used gearbox and transfer case to test on the Defender to help isolate the whine. Well, we have now run it in three configurations: 1) Original gearbox and original transfer case -> whiny 2) Original gearbox and used transfer case -> ALSO whiny 3) Used gearbox and original transfer case -> you guessed it, whiny as well The sound is exactly the same. I have a real trouble now finding another hypothesis. Sure, it could be that the used replacements have the exact same issue as the original, but since this seems to be a rare problem, I doubt it. Any other thoughts are greatly appreciated. Just a reminder, the whine happens in low range and high range in 4th, 5th, and 6th, growing in intensity. It does not appear to be something after the transfer case (like a differential) because it is not proportional to the speed of the car, but instead to the speed of the output of the gearbox. |

Might as well try the 4th option used gearbox and used transfer box and go the whole hog of options.[/list]

We finally got rid of the problem with another used transfer box. Gearbox was not the issue. It’s something inside the transfer box that we were not able to identify on inspection. The fact that it is audible only on 4th, 5th and 6th appears to be simply related to the input speed to the transfer box. We’ll keep this transfer box in the car and inspect the defective one once again to try to fix it.
I’m happy to see this saga come to a close. I hope this record will be helpful to others. Cheers |
