30k update
Evening guys, thought I’d do a quick 30k miles / 1 year of ownership review.

It’s amazing in almost every way. I have used the car for over landing/touring on the continent, greenlaning, day to day driving, commuting, taking family to weddings, moving house (twice!), sleeping… it’s just epic and suits my lifestyle in every sense.

Only one thing has broken which was the snorkel bracket, which was a £25 / 5 min job to replace.

However… it was on the limit for me financially to start with and with the insane value of them at the minute, I can’t really justify keeping it. And there in lies it’s downfall.. it’s too expensive for most real world users to thrash and enjoy. Whenever I’m off-roading it I am sweating thinking about the bill if I ding it. As such I will be sorting it for sale I think.

Anyone know the best place to approach? I’m feeling a bit out of my depth privately selling such an expensive machine..?

You could just start with a couple of local to you dealerships.

They would know the sort of enquiries that they are getting, they may well have a list of existing customers getting close to the end of their finance agreements and are worried about ordering new only to be told the spec has declined and the prices risen.

For such an expensive and tech heavy vehicle (not to mention JLR's reputation) i would image most customers would want the piece of mind of a dealership.

I would start there, i am sure others that have sold their Defenders would be able to pass on their experience.

Also, you could try ebay for a week with a price that suits you and see what happens just to test the waters. But do you really have the time to deal with tyre kickers?

I'd try one of the online car buying sites, such as:

* We Buy Any Car (WBAC).
* Carwow.
* Motorway.
* Cazoo.

I sold a car recently to Carwow, and it was all very straightforward. I uploaded some photos and filled in a few details, before speaking to them briefly on the phone. I found a buyer (a franchised dealer) within a couple of days and it took a few days more for them to collect. A driver came with a flat bed (?), checked the car over quickly, rang the dealer to confirm all was well and requested the money to be transferred into my account. It showed up within minutes - it took him longer to load the car and drive off.

Motorway are similar, though a bit fussy about photos. WBAC have various physical sites and you can get a value online before booking an appointment at your closest location. They do have a tendency to knock you down if the car isn't exactly as described (stone chips, etc).

I'd try Carwow and Motorway first, as they connect you with dealers. WBAC are a part of BCA (British Car Auctions, or some such) and they'll either sell the car on at one of their auctions or list it on their Cinch site.

I used Motorway for my Velar and was seriously impressed. Very easy, the price they got was £5k above WBAC / local dealer, and I ended up getting £8k more than I paid for it (used - 18 mo old) 2 years earlier - happy days. Purchaser was a LR dealer and they sent an agent to pick it up - money in my bank account before it even left my drive.

I am reading this with interest, nothing to do with the car as such as I have one of the older Defenders. This is what caught my eye "money in my bank account before it even left my drive."
Surely this is an inadvertant error on your part. I am sure you meant to type "money in my wife's account before it even left my drive." I know if I was selling.... Whistle 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Similar feelings to the Harry's Farm video. Just couldn't justify keeping it, when he was offered £10k above new price at 1yr old! Shocked An incrediable vehicle but £60k on a farm hack is just too much! James

Great to hear you've enjoyed the vehicle, even happier to hear you've not had any issues.

I understand the market might be cooling off a bit so if you are planning to get out, you're probably better to get on it sooner rather than later.

What sort of price are you hoping for?

Yes loved the vehicle! Must be one of the best all rounders out there at the moment hence their popularity I guess.
I’m hoping for 60-65k. Have been offered 53 by a variety of dealers including Land Rover so hoping for a bit more in a private sale before going down that route. Just had her professionally valeted and boy does she look good!

Can also recommend carwow.
I was offered £55k for a year old Velar P400e by my local dealer in NE Scotland.
Ended up on a forecourt in London with a sticker price of £72k.... 🙄 Pangy 90 HSE 250 with off-roady bits 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ⛰

Try goodbyecar.co.uk, they’re part of Peter Vardy group and have been advertising for all LR models. We achieved £4.5k more for the wife’s Evoque through them than Pentland offered Thumbs Up 2014 110 2.2TDCi XS Station wagon

Prices have dropped, new ones are coming through and l was recently offered a choice of two brand new 90 Hard Tops at list price.

l've got one on order and it's due next month, brought forward from next year. lf l don't buy it (finances are an issue at the moment) it will be available at list price from my local LR dealer.

D250 90 Hard Top with a few extras. Centre console, tow bar, front dogs, solar reflective windscreen, centre console, light blue.
£54,000

Motorway works well. Bit of an interesting time in the trade for values as the heady summer highs are starting to re correct. Dealers won’t want too much stock through Christmas and Jan. could be worth holding out until spring? 1951 80" S1 2.0

Motorway works differently, you get an "expected" price offered based on what dealers have bid on similar vehicles.

Then yours is put on the system, dealers bid and you see the best price, you can accept or reject it.

So your vehicle might get a "valuation" of £50,000 but it actually sells for £46,600 or £52,000
