So thought a dog had released themselves on my rear wheel, cleaned it off and it was oily.
so investigated more and took the plastic cover off (which was cracked so letting out the oil... Click image to enlarge Now its driping out at a rate, of about one drop every 5 seconds, the car is also angled over to that wheel at present when parked (so oil over to that side of the axel) I guess a seal has gone inside, and not just a drive flange, so thats a dismantle the end of the axel, does anybody do a complete kit for the replacement of that seal? if so anybody have the part number, have searched on here and came up with blank, the breather does not look blocked and not taken off the drive flange yet. Also any ideas if I could drive say 30km with it like that no probs or is that asking for issues? thanks in advance. further investigation, there is movement from 12-6 position very slight, but no movement 3-9 position when pulling on wheel, so I am guessing my wheel bearing is also on its way out Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

Funny you say that, just done exactly that, hence checking the wheel bearing.
No oil comes out when its level. Ordered a new flange gasket, new grease cap, as one that was on there was lets just say . Also ordered a timkin bearing to have ready for a future day. Being the rear axle, and have play at 12-6 and not 3-9 I suspect that the stub axle is worn. It happens when the inner race starts spinning on the stub axle.
Do not bother with the inner shaft seal. Many remove that so as to keep the drive members lubricated by the diff oil. Driving with the dust cap off will not hurt your Defender, but will have some oil on the wheel and tyre. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Just replace the cracked plastic cap. Nfa needed. They are better without axle end seal to keep dm lubricated. It's only front 12/6 and 3/9 wear that indicates King pins or bearing anything rear wear is bearing related. Cheers
