Ignition Live
Hi all,

I'm looking at dropping a powered sub into my td5 90 as part of a new audio system to upgrade the current after market head unit and original speakers, I'll also be fitting a reversing camera whilst I've got the headlining out.

Most of it I can figure out, but time to make an admission... I'm new to car electrics so can someone point me in the right direction of what I need to power this and how to go about it? I figure an ignition live but that's where my knowledge stops Embarassed

Thanks muchly!

Hi, to power the sub normally the manufacturer will specify a fused permanent live and a switched live from the head unit, normally output on the blue wire. The blue wire tells the sub when the head unit is powered up so the sub powers up too. Seeing as you’ve got a 90 the sub will be near the battery so take the live straight from there (and earth back to the battery too) with a suitably rated inline fuse.

For your reversing camera the simplest way of taking a 12v feed for this is to tap into the reversing light feed, assuming you only want the camera to power up when in reverse.

Thanks Penfold, that's a big help. I should point out my 90 doesn't have a sub currently and I'm yet to remove the middle seat to see what's there, maybe nothing...?

If there’s a middle seat there’s unlikely to be anything else there. Powered subs take up very little space and a good addition, simple to wire in too - good for a self confessed beginner.

Think about a battery ignition sense module from Mobile Centre and a blue sea secondary fuse box. Gives you lots of extra permanent and ignition feeds for accessories down the line Thumbs Up Andy
