windscreen frame rust.... concerns when buying
Evening guys and gals,

first post as I'm looking to enter the world of Defender ownership with a 90xs in Santorini black.

Overall it's clean, underneath is rust free and well looked after, it has some tasteful mods which are a bit plus, but after some Googling Big Cry I am now stressing about the windscreen surround.

I took some quick snaps today and it feels sold and not too blistered etc.. it's a 2011 and likely to have been painted / repaired previously. Just wondering what you guys thought of how bad this was or where else to check on the frame. it's mainly the bottom corners / seam.

Obviously everything can be fixed with enough money but my pot is going to be empty as Defenders are a pricey motor at the moment.

TIA

Rob

mine is a 2011 and had some corrosion on the bottom corner folds, repaired under warranty and has come back a little bit over the following 7 years, I just spray a bit of ACF 50 under the rubber and wipe it about to keep it at bay.

A window frame change or repair is not too onerous, I brought a good used one of an older model for only a few ££ off a fellow forum member just in case I need it in the future.

have you photos? DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

Seems like older frames are more resistant to corrosion.

Aluminium, unlike steel, is less corrosion resistant when it is highly alloyed. Probably later Defenders have a high alloying contents from all the different Heineken, Budweiser, Carlsberg... beer cans. I would not be surprised if the windscreen itself is made from Corona bottles Rolling with laughter 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Personally, I wouldn’t worry. Better off seeing the blistering than a freshly hidden/painted frame IMO. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

there is always that buddy, good call. The guy I'm buying it from is getting a patch done on the roof where a roof rack has previously been fitted and caused some blistering so I might if I go for it see how much the body shop will charge to do the windscreen frame at the same time.

I’ve just had my 2011 Puma windscreen frame touched up as it had two areas that were blistering, caught early removed and treated properly is my approach to avoid it becoming a bigger issue quickly.

All removed now but this is the before…

The top picture looks like a previous repair as it looks like the joint has been painted over so i would sand it back and repaint.

My 2003 screen frame is fine, yet my chums 2015 frame looks awful, mine has done 168k his has done 32k, they must have cheaped out on the frames at some point.

I don't think its the frames as such but the quality of the paint job..mines a 2015 model and the paint thickness is atrocious.

They all do that.

My 2015 has some bubbling in the same place. My local Defender body shop has it as a standard list item. Screen out, sand back and respray. They did it in a day for £200.

If the rest of the Defender is OK, do not let it put you off. Buy it, drive it, enjoy.

I'm also with a 2015 and also in the abysmal, atrocious (choose your adjective) camp.

My truck has been garaged since new, alway stored clean and dry. Waxoyled professionally, annually. The windscreen frame was repainted and blocks were replaced under warranty at 5 years old. Pedantic, opportunistic Swiss painters, great job, bill of 1800 chf to JLR.

And guess what? 3 years later the job needs to be done again. Roaming around 🇳🇴🇨🇭
