Antifreeze and power steering fluid requirements
There's a great thread on oils for various bits.

What is the recommendation for antifreeze and for power steering fluid?

Or try this Fuchs site used by our 80+ workshops. It says oil chooser but covers all fluids by simply entering your reg number

Texaco Delo XLC antifreeze , orange in colour, Is the stuff LR use plus rebadge and sell as their own. It is really good antifreeze. Dilute 50/50 with deionised water, available cheap from supermarkets as people use in irons.

It’s not easy to come by in less than 20l concentrate cans but I got a 20l can from opie when it was in a clearance sale and with forum discount and free postage it worked out reasonable, noting given dilution and times between changing I now have at least 40 years worth but still cheaper than buying 5L from landrover Very Happy

If your flushing your coolant completely consider using a modern coolant product that you don’t dilute and doesn’t contain water. Ride like you stole it!!

”modern” does not necessarily mean better, I think the jury is out as to whether waterless coolant outperforms “Quality” traditional coolant mixed 50/50 with Deionised water. Evans seems to be the major provider of this technology, but reading reviews I would not go near it.
Each to their own, but I have not read any issues with the quality traditional LR coolant mixed with deionised water in puma Engines.

For Power Steering Fluid, Opie Oils told me to use CHF (central hydraulic fluid) not ATF/PAS fluid. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Agreed, shame we have to find out the hard way. However opinions on waterless coolants do vary though so we each need to do what we think is best on the advice received for our intended usage. Ride like you stole it!!

After some more research I've found.

STC50529 - Antifreeze
STC50519 - PAS Fluid

Searching for these part numbers finds products from the usual suspects.

How frequently should we be changing these?

I don’t think PAS fluid has any replacement cycle but for coolant circa 5yrs depending on use and working conditions. Ride like you stole it!!

Here is a serving schedule for a 2.4 puma

https://www.lrworkshop.com/servicing-sched...-2007-2011

And one for the 2.2 puma

https://www.lrworkshop.com/servicing-sched...-2012-2016

You will see the coolant spec is Wss-M97B44-D and that 120k miles (200,000 km) / 10 years is the renewal frequency.

The texaco delo xlc meets this spec, https://www.texacolubricants.com/en_uk/hom...olant.html

In fact when you read the customer benefits section in the above link they say it’s good for 650,000km !
With the caveat “These are general indications. Some OEM’s may have their own specific guidelines, and these should always take precedence”

I always go less on fluid changes, I.e no more than 5k miles between engine oil changes, so 60k miles / 5 years won’t hurt for coolant. I did mine at approx 60k miles when I replaced my main Radiator, I expect a rad fail will be less than 120k miles or 10 years so that will likely dictate coolant change interval more than service schedule.

I can see online that pre mixed 50/50 texaco delo xlc is available for £30 in a a 20l can, so that would be good for 2 changes , I.e 10 / 20 years worth.

Also I don’t see any schedule for changing PAS fluid

Thanks for that, Ianh!

Definitely helps with maintenance planning.

I just finished watching video posted here recently about the effects of long oil changes as dictated by the owner's manual and it was quite concerning. The mechanic did mention the preferred change interval for engine oil but didn't go into such detail with the other fluids you should be minding in your vehicle.

I personally change oil and all filters (air, fuel, oil) every 10,000 KMs. I'm just figuring out a reasonable change interval for the other fluids as it's easy to visually check and top off but you do eventually have to replace what's in the system when the time comes. I'm only afraid that if we follow the manufacturer's recommendation that we may be setting ourselves up for premature wear and failure of components like what happened in the video.

What do you all think?
