Been messing about with the Def, to tighten up backlash/clunk, including tightening a couple of loose bolts, replacing the rearmost UJ, which had seized/rusted/failed, checked seals on flanges, etc etc. Still yet to do a run. But whilst under I did a quick check of the front and rear axle rotation before being stopped by either front or rear diff, and I’m estimating that each turned approx 1cm before engagement. In the rear this was with the front of the prop off the handbrake drum, on the front both ends were fixed tight but the gearbox was in neutral.
Does 1cm sound about right? I checked fluids in each diff and they looked ok and at correct level (albeit the front diff was silvery grey and the rear diff a good quality gold, despite them both being changed at the same time), all bolts on the facing between prop and diff were tight, UJs all good (after replacement) etc. So what thoughts? Jip, sounds about right.
1/8th of a turn is normal. |

Thanks JFH. I’d suggest it’s probably even less than that. Good to know. Taking her for a spin soon, to see what difference some tightening and a new UJ will have made

I've found that greasing the prop shafts and UJs makes a difference but it only lasts for a short while.

1 piece rear shafts should also help. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Will buy them eventually, but at the moment both the shaft and flange are HD upgrades and there is no noticeable play. Monsieur Le Grenadier
