Hi!
I need to replace the high pressure PAS pipe. Does someone have an instruction at hand like the Haynes workshop manual? I ordered the Haynes manual yesterday, but the part comes today, and I would like to do the repair this weekend. Simon at https://www.youtube.com/c/LandRoverDrive shows the replacement for a LHD, but I have a RHD. Help is greatly appreciated. 1986 soft top, TD5 Northants response group |

Thanks, but this is for the steering box. I would like to change the PAS pipe/line only. Do I have to remove the radiator for this? 1986 soft top, TD5

Shouldnt be any need to remove the radiator, you will be able to make some room by taking the viscous fan (note it is normal RH threaded unlike most viscous fans) and upper shroud off though.
I find a set of crows foot spanners makes doing the unions up on the box a bit easier but it is doable with normal spanners. Make sure you use the correct size spanner though to avoid rounding off the unions. Cant remember the sizes required but i think they are imperial. High pressure pipe should be easy, union at each end and two small bolts on the back of the front crossmember which will release the pipe clamps. If you have a syringe/fluid extractor then it will help to drain as much fluid from the reservoir as possible first as fluid will leak out of the ports once the pipe is removed. As for bleeding it, slacken the bleed nipple on the top of the box and ensure no air is trapped in it. Then i usually just jack up the front wheels and turn from lock to lock a few times with the engine running and top up the fluid level. You will obviously need some new PAS fluid. It does look a bit different but may well be correct. I suggest you remove just the union from the pump first to confirm your hose fits.

Well, not so lucky I guess.
I thought that I was almost there, when I realized that one side had the wrong connection... I think you have the correct part. The two hex heads on your old pipe come apart. They are just rusted together. You can ruin the nut nearest to the rubber pipe if required, but must protect other as will need to be fitted again.

Thanks! I see that at least the pipe is ok. So now I need the correct adapter. Any idea where I can get it from or what the name is?

I changed mine at the weekend with no problems.
Just a thought what P/S pump have you got fitted to yours as I am assuming its to go in a hybrid as you list your vehicles as a 1986 TD5. Did your engine come out of a discovery as the P/S pumps are slightly different on the HP outlet adaptor which you have shown, the Discovery one is smaller than a defender one. I am using a discovery pump but have used the defender outlet to mate to defender PS pipes. |

I bought it this year, but the conversion was done by Devon 4x4 some years ago. I guess the TD5 came from a Discovery. I'll have a talk with them tomorrow. If I'm lucky, I can just find the ferrule adapter thingy. 1986 soft top, TD5
