Defender 4.6 V8 Project
Morning all,
Started this project a while back and since I can’t PM until I post something here goes.
From far away in the depths of the empire, purchased a clapped out 99 TD5
Turns out this TD5 was formerly owned by the Duchy estate, which sounds impressive but in reality looked like it was the gamekeepers van, only found a couple of used .22 cartridges and no Crown Jewels between the seat cushions but oh well.

After a couple of months on the high seas it arrived in New Zealand…

After a few weeks on the high seas it arrived in New Zealand and I found the delights of salted roading vs Land Rovers finest anti corrosion protection.

So the plan is ,
Remove TD5 that runs on the devils brew and sell to an enthusiast of all things that rattle.
Rebuild R380 box, fit Bellhousing from Ashcroft
Rebuild 4.6 Rover v8 ex p38 Range Rover. Ported heads, too hat liners, larger valves
Build MegaSquirt or similar ecu, strip loom of oil filled wiring to ecu
Rebuild both axles, fit Ashcroft ATB to the rear
All new brakes from 110.
Paint to Grasmere green as in 2015 Anniversary
Fit Wolf wheels
Modify rear tub to Puma spec and fit Puma forward facing rear seats
New head lining and carpets etc
Rebuild LT230 as it’s got more backlash than an outraged millennial
Install Rover V8, new fuel lines etc
Other than that not much to it I guess

How hard can it be ?

P38 lump in filthy form, no dropped liners although a couple have turned oval slightly
Top hats from turners to go in ,

Congrats on he purchase. You should have a look at my build thread as ive got the same running gear i.e. 4.6, r380 and megasquirt. 2 things i learnt.... no1 should have gone auto, and ive since converted mine to auto and have a rebuilt r380 sitting on the bench! and no2... should have gone GEMS. MS has been interesting as a project but its a ball ache and isnt any better than a sorted gems. Any questions let me know!

Gidday, thanks for the comments- I’ll have a look at your build.
I’ve done a megasquirt before on an MGB 3.5 that went ok but I’m always interested in ideas.

It’s probably on your thread but why the auto ? I’m just redoing the transfer box now anyway for 1.1 - I would have gone 1.2 but Ashcrofts was out of stock.

I’ve been having issues uploading pics but here goes

Found rear seats on the local EBay which was a win, only problem is they’re so good the front ones look like crap now
Guess it’s a re cover set later ..

Well if you need a ms tune file to get you started let me know, we can compare notes! There is a decent forum for rover v8 Megasquirt over on lr4x4 I’d recommend. They know there ms1 stuff.

On the r380 I found the on/off idle transition really difficult to get right and make it drivable. My 4.6 is stage 3 so it could be the cams but all in all it wasn’t that great. Once I was on the throttle it was fine but when going slow it was a pita. Very snatchy. The auto box really suits the engine better since changing it over and I should have listened to Greeni on here in the first place tbh. Means the MS can keep the idle revs held against the torque converter and it’s tons more drivable.

Just for ref mine is running ms1 with o2 sensor, map based tune and pcv valve for idle control, all based on Nigel’s kit.

Thanks, I’ll possibly take you up on the ms file - it’s a long story but I’ve built this one from a Speeduino ecu - have a mega squirt on the MG and it’s very similar. I didn’t have any issues with the MG although it’s only running the spark currently- so have that bit sorted at least. The fuel map could be interesting as I’ve built this engine myself and it’s never run - so running in the cam could be a challenge without a base map on Tuner studio.

Still a ways off for that, I’ve only got the chassis a month or so ago so have been building that up.
Heads are on finally and engine / box in but I found after trying to ignore the transfer box that it was about as tight as your prime ministers grip on reality so it’s back to Ashcrofts for a rebuild kit and new gears.

Next is juggling the exhaust headers and making it fit ..
