Has anyone come up with some form of ingenuous rear door shelter?
The VW crowd can do something like this https://stitchesandsteel.com/products/barn...8367894714 Of course the Defender only has one door I just want something that's quick and easy to provide some cover while changing boots, drying dogs, making a quick brew, etc. I know there's rear awnings but messing about with poles and guy ropes is a pain and a permanent attachment to the roof is a no go due to height restrictions. |

There is a rear door umbrella type awning that I have seen before, but can’t find anything about it now. Something really simple, and not requiring pegging would be lovely.

Currently working on one at the moment. Will post when finished. The supports fix to the rack and slide out when needed to about 1.8m. The top canvas is fixed to the rear load bar with awning strip and the 3 walls will hang of using Velcro.

Good topic - mainly posting so that I can see any updates or other ideas.
Losing the shelter over the backdoor is, for now, the only downside I've found to going from a folding tent to a hard shell 'pop up' one. I really miss the 'instant shelter' it provided. I have an idea for something myself, and have roughly sketched it out and bought material. Basically it would be a three sided 'tent' that would clip onto my rearmost roof bar,and then have two upright poles put in about 1.5m from the rear of the car, guy them out and you'd have the basics of an awning/shelter. I'm hoping to find the time to make it up in the darker months / colder nights. But would love to see other solutions/alternatives. This works for me - less than 2 minutes to ‘deploy’ (there are guy ropes for when needed!)
I seem to recall it was “a bargain” and unusually my wife agreed Just seen one on One of the Defender Fb groups for £150. Click image to enlarge |

That looks like it will collect a puddle when it rains, just like my Caranex😡

If the rain is that bad then the guys ensure it’s ‘as tight as a drum’ and certainly no water gets collected. This photo was against the clock 😉 |

This could be used on the rear gutter.
I love Optimil stuff but the price is a bit steep for some brackets and awning rail. https://www.optimill-uk.com/awning-rail-kit.html |

My DIY solution: glued channel rails to the roof's frame, modified a tarp. Quickly installed if need be.

Large fishing umbrellas of various sizes and shape are a very good alternative.
