here's the scenario.
old building with gas pipe running from basement up a riser located in the middle of the building to the roof. new boilers require a new / larger gas pipe........ only the riser needs to be vented as basement and top to atmosphere !!!! how do you vent the base of the riser to atmosphere when it both at basement level and in the centre of the building?......or is there a get out of jail clause?  |

Venting a void containing a gas supply is only to prevent a gas build up that is permissible from a tightness test with appliances connected.
Multiply the width X height of the void (length is not important) Eg void is 300 x 300mm 0.3 x 0.3 = 0.09m square, no issues having any size larger. Gas by itself does not explode, but when you vent it, it gives that oxygen needed to do
Not familiar with gas regulations, but check if fitting gas detectors could be a solution. If the new pipe is installed in a duct the pipe would be vented at both ends, there’s also trac pipe cc product which is a pipe within an pipe system. But still check with your Gas Safe installer

LPG has a different set of rules
