advice needed please
May I please tap into the collective wisdom of the site?

A rather strange one... I have a 2011 TDCi 2.4 Puma 110

When in neutral with the clutch in all sounds fine. When I let the clutch out (but only in neutral) I get a new fairly loud noise - almost a rattling - from under vehicle perhaps? Goes immediately that I put the clutch back in.

No issue at all with gear selection, clutch function, engine strong, etc...

Wondered if anyone could give me a diagnosis/other thoughts?

Thanks for any help!

Possibly a clutch pressure plate spring broken loose. Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

I'm guessing that you're confused with your "in" and "out". A clutch is "in" when the pedal is up and "out" when the pedal is pressed. If I'm right in my guess, then likely causes are compressed springs in the driven plate or chatter in the gearbox.

What does it do if you select neutral on the transfer box and have it in a gear in the main box and repeat your test?

If you switch off the engine with the main box in neutral and the clutch in (i.e., pedal up) do you get a noticeable sharp rattle as the engine stops? This is the usual symptom of a dying driven plate.

Do you know how old the driven plate is (years/miles)?

I had a brand new 2.4 that rattled almost from new. It was as mentioned above knackered spring on the clutch plate

Thanks

so tests done!

1. ''What does it do if you select neutral on the transfer box and have it in a gear in the main box and repeat your test?'' - answer: exactly the same thing

2. ''If you switch off the engine with the main box in neutral and the clutch in (i.e., pedal up) do you get a noticeable sharp rattle as the engine stops?'' - answer: the usual vibration of engine stopping (is that the oil centrifuge or something?? Anyway entirely as usual) then, when that has stopped, a much quieter but new rattle I had not previously noted - so probs yes....

Best get the clutch looked at... Sad

The 'new rattle' when the engine has stopped is probably the EGR doing its normal cleaning cycle ie three 'chuggas' - you have a different problem if it stops making this noise!

No centrifugal filter on a.Puma. I fear your driven plate is on its last legs.

Sounds similar to my issue, which as I was advised was the springs rattling on the clutch plate, so a new clutch solved it.
Have a look at the 2.4 CLUTCH REPLACEMENT - WHAT ELSE TO GET DONE? thread in PUMA TDCI.
(Sorry, I don’t know how to link to a thread on my mobile).

so had clutch replaced today - quick shoutout for great service at Country Rovers in Taunton

Prior to doing it the noise was a bit louder, but driving well, and still not intrusive at all...

Was on last legs and needed doing++when opened up - so very glad I took it seriously

thanks guys for advice!
