Puma steering lock repair
Hi Guys,
Just purchased a double cab, and the factory steering lock doesn't activate.
Can't seem to find much about it online, but is this an easy fix/what parts do I need?
Does it involve replacing the ignition itself (and replacing the existing keys)?
Thanks- I've had a lightweight for 25 years (still got it Very Happy ) and first foray with the Defender.
P.S. It was an estate vehicle for the company I work for- quite a rough example!

Are you sure the steering lock doesn’t work?

You have to turn it almost 180 degrees for it to lock. It took me a while to even realise there was a steering lock on the Defender with it being such a rotation. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Wow- that's a big movement! Will double check tonight but can't have been far off that. Thanks.

Should lock with steering pointing ahead. If not, someone fitted the steering UJ offset to steering shaft. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Definitely not working- span the steering wheel beyond 360 with no keys in ignition.
What’s involved in fixing it, and will it require new ignition keys (just about to order a second key)?
Thanks

Just fit a barrel and key set from Land Rover it includes a complete new column lock and new barrels for the doors with spare key. The parts are very reasonable but you will need to remove the dash to access the shear bolts on the existing lock.

Thanks- I can’t just replace the steering lock without a new barrel and key set?
Will a new key set/ignition affect the existing central locking?

The steering lock mechanism is part of the lock barrel assembly, so if it can’t be repaired then yes you’ll need a new one with associated new keys and having to change the door lock barrels too. Changing it won’t affect the central locking.

Personally I wouldn’t bother - the steering lock is fairly pointless anyway.

I think that’s where I’m getting to- thanks. Fairly easily broken in a theft scenario in any event- will have to rely on other retro fitted security measures.
Thanks for the advice.

As above - just leave it alone and either fit a steering lock (disclok) or a removable steering wheel etc. 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.
