You have to remove the bolts/nuts on the big end bearings to remove the piston.
So the sump must come off. |

Yes, I know that.
I rebuilt a Morris Marina engine with the same problem in 1986. The problem with the Puma 2.4 is that it has a 2" deep lower crankcase which will not come off. This is a Ford Transit engine and I have just read on a Transit forum that there is an extra bolt behind the flywheel holding the lower crankcase in place so I have to take the engine out. I will let you know how I get on. |

Removing the gearbox isn’t a hard job. You’d need this off and the flywheel to fit a new rear crank seal when you’ve finished anyways. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

Hi, I appreciate this is an old thread. But did you remove the engine or were you able to get the lower crank off? - I have a cracked piston, but it’s on low miles, so replacing the crank gasket/bears is not my concern. |
