Swollen nuts!
Just had the Puma XS back from its MOT and service. Noticed on the invoice that 7 wheel nuts had to be replaced due to rust swelling under the outer "beauty" cover. They were replaced with OEM nuts so I can look forward to this happening again soon. I am only glad that, as yet, I have not had to change a wheel in an emergency as the socket would certainly not fit.
I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion to prevent rust. I thought about soaking them in WD40
or similar.
A warning for all those planning a long trip - take a 27mm and a 28mm socket with you. 2015 90 XS Station Wagon Puma 2.2

This is a well-known problem and has been discussed many times before on the forum. Alternatives include aftermarket (posh, expensive) wheel nuts, removing the vanity cover, or using a 28mm socket.

It is unlikely that WD40 would prevent rust long term, there are better anti-rust fluids you could soak your new nuts in before use.

I wonder sometimes how widespread this problem is. My Disco2 is twenty years old and hasn't had the problem, my Defender is 15 years old and hasn't had the problem. Perhaps it is a QA issue which means that some nuts corrode more than others, or maybe atmospheric.

I'd also question why they "had" to be replaced. Swelling doesn't stop you taking them off, and it isn't a safety issue. Were you asked beforehand if you wanted replacements? I imagine from a dealer that they are absurdly expensive for mediocre quality wheel nuts.

Had the same problem; my solution from another thread :

Had exactly the same problem, 27mm nuts swollen to fit 28mm socket.

After ordering new wheel nuts, to prevent the problem of swelling reoccurring, gave all the new nuts a purge with thinned waxoyl, blown through the nut/cover gap with some compressed air. (I think I used about 10mL of 2/3rds Waxoyl/1/3 white spirit per nut, put down the centre hole, then blown out till just air escaped) Did all 20 nuts, wiped of any excess, let then “dry/cure” for a few days before replacing them.

Replaced the locking nuts with plain nuts – all of them.

I had what I think where NRC7415 on my old 90. No fancy cap. The zinc plating got dull over time but are still perfectly useable. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
