Thanks for your replies everyone.

For completeness, I found a breakdown of the contents of the Land Rover kit mentioned above - quite a lot of things that are useless in a Puma, but I'll share it anyway:

3/8" square drive BiHex Sockets:
10mm Dog Guard mountings and thermostat housing.
11mm ?????????????
12mm Not found yet....
13mm Not found yet....
21mm Deepreach. Sparkplugs on V8 not 300TDi, bleed valves radiator and wheel nuts!
Spanners: 10, 11, 12 & 13. Combination BiHex ring and open jaw with 15 degree offset.
Plastic coated linesmans pliers sidecutting 6"
Plastic coated Plumbers monkey wrench 10"
Spark plug gapping tool.
Insulating tape 12mm roll of.
Screwdriver handle, black plastic.
Blade slotted and phillips 6".
Blade phillips, angled. (Carbs on V8 use only?)
3/8" Sliding T-bar 8"
3/8" Extension 6"
3/8" Extension 3"




Anyway. I'm getting closer on putting a kit together from my spares. The trick is paring it down to the essentials for a kit to live permanently in the car to support euro touring, this is the list I have so far:

1x 12oz engineers hammer
1x small chisel
1x 5mm head punch
1x medium sized adjustable spanner
1x pair waterpump pliers
1x pair linesman pliers
1 x pair medium-sized molegrips (flat or curved blades?)
1x pair crimping pliers/wire strippers and a few crimp connectors including a few heat shrink solder butt connectors (for real emergencies only - like for cutting out a bit of melted wire)
1x blowtorch type lighter (already have - works for the above and for BBQs)
1x 1/4" bit driver with quick chuck (the one I have is this https://www.tengtools.com/uk/products/bits...ver-183mm)
1x set of flat/ph and pz screwdriver bits inc. torx and allen bits
6 (or 7?)mm hose clip driver socket to fit the bit driver
1x set of combination spanners (open to size suggestions here, thinking 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, 19 plus 1x 9/16" for props)
1x 3/8" ratchet
1x 3/8"dr 3" long wobble extension
1x 3/8"dr 6" long wobble extension
1x set of 3/8" dr 6pt sockets (again, open to size suggestions, these would match the spanners - would need to include 9/16" for the props)
1x 13mm 12pt socket for calipers
Small selection of Torx bit sockets (these would be for sizes too big for the driver that need a ratchet, thinking gearbox drain plugs but am clueless when it comes to Torx sizes)
1x 52mm hub nut socket (driven by the extending 1/2"dr wheel brace I've just bought)
Folding Stanley knife
Roll of insulation tape
Mini-roll of duck tape
Roll of self amalgamating tape
1x LED torch

yup - touch wood its never let me down but am driving to the alps in January and the sensible bit of my brain is telling me to take the Mrs' Hyundai.

Just remembered I had a stack of Dewalt Toughsystem2 boxes sitting unused up at the unit, so that's the box for this lot sorted. ShadowFoam even sell inserts custom made for them - my god this is getting daft.

thats a really nice set, thanks for sharing.

Could I ask which sizes the 5 bits to the right are as it looks like you've selected the bits yourself rather than those that came with the standard Wera set: https://www.amazon.co.uk/10-pieceKraftform...&psc=1

Here's a bit of good fortune for people who appreciate such things: The original plan was to store the tool box and 1st aid/bulbs/spares/warning triangle, hi-vis etc under the seats and clipped to the sides of the cab... but in repurposing my existing spare tools for the project I've just dug out all of my afore mentioned DeWalt Tough boxes. I'm a massive fan of these - really well made, waterproof and with a vent. Anyway - I have two ToughSystem 1 cases and a load of Toughsystem 2 cases. The two older ones are technically compatible with the later ones, but never quite fit right - so I was going to get shot of them.

I'm also about to remove the rear seats.

Turns out a DeWalt (or Stanley equivalent) DS150 box fits absolutely perfectly into the recess left behind when the seats are removed. There are even two pre-existing trim holes in the side panel that can be used for a bungee and some rubber buffers. Can't quite show it with the seats still in the way, but you get the idea from the images: even the height is perfect - sits just below the window.

So I can use my set to have one box each side - one for recovery bits/1st aid/bulbs/warning triangle/etc and the other for tools. I'll obviously make a light canvas bag or something out of modus seat material to put each of them in first to keep them out of sight.

ends up being a bit like the L663 Side mounted boxes... only inside.

I'd add a good 27mm 1/2" Drive Impact socket to remove the wheel nuts, the one JLR supply is trash!

Which I wraped a piece of bicycle inner tube rubber over to prevent damage to the wheel.

A good socket that can't slip and is a precise fit on an extendable wheel brace is what is needed on a dark wet night with a puncture. Zaid-M

I’ve actually just closed another thread where I was oooking for wheelbrace advice. Based on suggestions I got a Teng extending brace and a matching 27mm socket: just like yours except standard depth.

I never us an extension bar .With a 2 pound hammer ,a half inch sliding t bar and 27 mm socket i have not yet come across a wheelnut that wont come off in seconds.........(huge trucks excluded )

I carry the Halfrauds kit and a few other things. Duck tape, air pump, WD 40 and cable ties are a must and most used. Wheel bearing kit, both sizes of UJs, fan belt and an alternator are carried for longer journeys.

wow - that looks ace. I can't quite make out all the text when zooming in tho, it gets a bit blurry. Just tried to find a copy of the book (tom sheppard vehicle dependent expedition guide) but its mega-bucks for a copy.
