My workshop manual states 2.4l for initial fill and 2.2l for service fill. The workshop manual does not state that you have to only put a maximum of 2.2l in. The volumes quoted could be just so know how much you'll need before you start. The Mustang could be different because of a different ratio set inside the box taking up a different volume. |

I pretty sure for the 2.4 what they mean by dry fill is the first time a new or refurbished gearbox is fitted you fill with 2.4L, then subsequently when you do an oil change you refill with 2.2L.
In the 2.2 owners manual they do not mention dry fill, only a refill figure of 2.4L. They also state this is the capacity, not the minimum. |

The engine in the Puma is at a slope so the gearbox is at a slope as well. If everything was level you could fill to the bottom of the filler plug but if you do that it will overfill and there is a chance of over heating the gearbox. That is what a mechanic told me when it was getting serviced. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Just to say 'thank you' for this discussion. I've just had the gearbox oil changed at "my indie" and I thought they had screwed up (pun intended ) because from the dirt I could telll they used the "not the fill plug". But then I remembered this thread. So all's fine. Also, the "not the fill plug" is easier to get to, I think. |

Hmm - I may have filled my gearbox using the "DEFINITELY not the f**king fill plug" number 8 "RH reverse shift fork pivot bolt". Anyway it went back in fine and gearbox works fine. Have I got away with it?! I remember the plug being weirdly long (facepalm) and it was definitely a 12mm allen key head. |

As long as it went back in and you can still engage all the gears (although not all at the same time - that would indicate a detent fault) and there are no coffee-grinder noises coming from the box, I'd say that you have got away with it.
It really is remarkable just how hard Ford and LR between them have made this simple task. It is also interesting to note that in the diagram I posted earlier in the thread there word "FILL" is clearly shown cast into the gearbox casing adjacent to the "definitely the right filler plug" plug, but this helpful feature is not present on any MT82 I have ever seen. |

blackwolf Expert advice in easy-to-understand layman's terms.
Lucky that pivot bolt is not of the kind you unscrew and then hear a spring uncoil or a part falling down... |
