I had only thought of doing the sides as my wheel boxes are full of holes from the previous owner having fixed a box to it! Was thinking of using marine ply 10mm but not sure abour water getting between the ply and the aluminum arch...should I worry?
Floor is going to have thick rubber matting to stop dogs from siding about! |

we use self tappers at work and you can buy self adhesive sound proofing/insulation from ebay etc

The self tappers...can they go straight into the body or should they have pilot holes?

I'd do pilot holes, unless using pias (self drilling) screws

You need pilot holes into which the self tappers screw, they can't drill into the metal themselves ...and obviously you won't be fitting screws into the exterior body panels but rather into the hardtop and body tub frame. TGE do some ply panels - at a price. http://www.tge-defendertrims.co.uk/index.htm Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Thank you for all the advice so far, one further question:
1) If i wanted to put ply over the wheel boxing, how to I attach the ply? a) attach them the same as the side pannels i.e. with self tapping screws! But can this be done to the aluminium arches? b) Create a frame (either timber or metal) around the wheel boxes to attach th eply to. But this would obviously reduce the interior space. If I was going to clad the seat boxes with ply then I'd drill right through and bolt them in place rather than use self-tappers. Use countersunk bolts and a blob of silicon or similar underneath to prevent moisture getting between the ply and the ali. Darren

You could glue the ply to the boxes with blobs of Sikaflex or similar but you'd have a devils own job if you ever wanted to remove it. For inspiration seek out interior photos of ex utility, service or commercial Defenders. Steve.
