I thought if it was cv it would be worse on full lock cv only year old plus new shaft and swivels had drive flange of its mint its hard to pin it down as you say only occurring when on road it sounds like a ligh metal on metal similar to the sound of my rear pads jumping which I had a while back thanks for helping Endeavour To Persevere

I have the same noise, I also thought it was a stone in the tire but then I heard it while stationary.
Its definitely more obvious while driving though but doesn't seem to align with engine revs. I'm yet to locate the issue so hopefully someone here has an idea ? |

Do you have the brake disk backer plates? Has one rusted so it’s moving and hitting the disk? Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.
5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details |

I don’t think anything in the diff would make that noise if it failed, you could drain the oil and see if anything falls out to be sure. The only thing that you would possibly hear in the diff at 1x rpm would be crown wheel teeth missing, but this is unlikely to be audible unless you are missing a few in a row and the pinion is falling out of mesh. Can’t help but think you’d have bigger problems though.

Try spinning wheels by hand whilst secured properly and see if you hear anything around. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R
