Thudding sound under passenger side
My PUMA 110 has developed a persistent thudding sound under the passenger side footwell which occurs only when on unpaved road.

The thudding is not metal to metal, but sounds more muffled as if from a freely moving rubber suspension component.

A visual inspection of the radius arm bushings and rear mounts doesn't indicate anything unusual.

Also notice a considerable pulling to the left in the steering wheel...

Was wondering if anyone here had encountered similar symptoms? Just fix it before your friends find out it broke again - Landy Life Forever!

Jack up the front left wheel and give it a spin. Wheel bearing or disc/calliper issue? 2009 Defender 90 CSW 2.4 TDCI.

Check upper and lower front damper rubbers, also bonnet hinge plastic bushes, failing that as suggested take a look at the ARB links and bushes.

In effect try and bounce the suspension you should be able to zero in on it if you do though I know it’s easier said than done.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone,

Everything's bolted or strapped down tight in the battery box tighter than a virgin's knees... definately something in the suspension..

Had an unprompted passenger comment on it on Sunday dureing a drive through the hills, saying she could feel it right under her feet...

A wheel bearing I think would be felt more in the steering, and calipers I would imagine would sound a bit more metallic.

@ Custom90Steve, am in agreement with your simulation approach... planning on getting some help tomorrow with rocking the van while I crawl under and look out for any play in the individual rubbers Just fix it before your friends find out it broke again - Landy Life Forever!

Okay.... so over the last two days:

Tried changeing the left side radius arm bushings and rubber with no effect.

Realised afterward that there was movement in the top of the left schock absorber.

Both left and right top-most dampers seem to have melted right out into a black sticky goo.

The others werent very bad at all, however decided to change all eight while the shock absorbers were out.

Managed to use two of the old dampers that were in best shape on the steering damper on which the rubbers were half melted away also.

Changed two axle dust caps in the process and topped up joints with oil the caps seem to have just crumbled away, leaving the rusty axle spline center exposed to the elements.

Anyway.... I digress....Thudding sound gone! Bow down

Done and dusted!!!

Afterwards, got a once over at a wheel alignment garage which found no further wear and went ahead with the alignment.

Speaking of wheel alignment....has anyone here had issues with pulling to the left even after alignment? Just fix it before your friends find out it broke again - Landy Life Forever!

It usually something simple, that is the nature of the beast. Finding it is the problem Laughing A good example of this is the issue I had with a reversing light and how it was sorted.

Yes indeed....

Had this same reverse light issue just after it came out of warrenty.... or noticed it then anyway...

The easiest way is through the top by removing the cubby.

The issue had a remarkabley simple fix once out: the switch is a mechanical ball and spring assembly.

Just needed a bit of WD40 and thumb rubbing... been working like new ever since.

...at least...i think....havent seen it in a while come to think of it...usually inside the van while reversing Confused
