Diesel or oil leak, what does it smell of?

looks more like a fuel leak at that end of the truck, the rubber pipes crumble as they age

Yes I originally thought it was diesel... it was light and less viscous when I checked at first but on checking a bit later it was black... maybe it picked up some bitumen from the road (?! No clue). I'm going to get under and check properly in the light tomorrow. Will put a clearer photo up then too Very Happy

Do the sniff test, big difference in smell between diesel and EP 90, used in axle and transfer box

Given its location and the areas were its travelled I’m pretty sure that’s diesel, it will dissolve any wax protection and oil it touches, hence the black stuff. So get a torch in there via the offside wheel arch and I bet you find a perished hose, especially if you filled to the brim before the incident.

Yes!!! I wondered if that might be related... I did fill to the brim given current diesel prices (I found one forecourt selling at marginally less criminal rates!). Is it likely fine to drive to a garage for repair do you think? As I recall a repair is a bit involved as you have to drop the tank and support for access... meaning rear x member has to come out too. Not something the layman can do on his drive I'm guessing (?) Worth looking at fueltank too, sometimes a seam can go too but is fairly rare and more rare than the fuel pipes I’d say.
Definitely looks like a diesel leak too me, but worth looking at axle breather too.

Thumbs Up ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

I’m assuming you have a 90, which is far more difficult re dropping a tank sufficiently to deal with hose issues than a 110.

Worth reading this.https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic22296...t=breather

Trick when filling, listen closely to the filler when filling tank, as you hear the whoosh/ gargling in the filler hose as you fill STOP. You won’t have any leaks then Very Happy .

Should be ok to drive to indi to get sorted if it is one of the fuel to tank hoses.

110s and 130s of the era of the OP's 90 had the earlier breather arrangements with the breather exiting the top of the tank and running to the RNS corner of the vehicle and the filling vent running up to the filler cap. Later vehicles incorporate the breather into the vent spigot.

I'm not sure if 90s have the same variation.

Well a little more investigation tells me it's a diesel leak... its slow
But persistent and seems to be starting quite high up 😔 drives fine and I think rate maybe slowing down. Will take on advice about filling. Hopefully this repair can wait until I put her in for a new rear cross member.. Bow down

So quite a sizeable leak... two spots are probably 24hrs stood each. Mechanics I've spoken to reckon this is the breather tube (without seeing). Seems quite a lot to me... have driven to try and drop the volume in the tank... recommended to only fill3/4 until I can repair. What a time to have this issue 1.70 at the pumps Big Cry

It is an easy fix either at home if you are keen, or for any competent garage. Other than the loss of expensive fuel no problem.

Yes the breather tube can go bad on you. When I got the Puma 110 in 2008 I extended the breather tube to the bulkhead. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
