A queston of gaskets ....
Can I ask why LR seem to have so many metal gaskets ?

Take the centrifugal oil filter -> sump pipe which has a metal gasket at each end. Dinky small bolts that torque up to 10nm

Invarably even with cleaning and torquing up to the right setting, they still leak

I recently ftted a turbo technics turbo to my TD5.... it came with (only) 2 crush washers and a oil feed pipe ( standard defender td5 one is too short ) and a paper/ whatever gasket for the oil drain pipe to turbo fitting. This again has dinly little bolts with a 10nm torque seting.

The LR gasket for this is again a metal one.

I fitted the techncis supplied gasket ... think i torqued it up.

After an extended test perod outside the garage I've noticed a il leak of biblical proportions... having left it overnight, this morning started it again and with the help of a mirror noticed a weeping round the drain pipe .. which of course will get worse as things warm up

Course i need to replace gasket but do i get another paper one or try the metal LR one?

Is the theory that the mouldings in the metal gastet get squashed flat and provide a better seal ?
A

p.s. Did find the turbo technics oil feed pipe to long, and the ends arent at 90 deg to each other so you end up having to twist it ether at the engine end or the turbo end ... that's fun! Santa - 1977 Series 3 - new chassis, tub, disc brakes,SU Carb
