Drove with the fuel cap open
Hi

After filling up 60L of diesel in my 2011 Defender 110, I forgot to close the fuel cap and drove for about 20 minutes. The roads were clean but it was slightly raining. No warning lights came up on the dashboard.

I'm assuming this would've harmed my engine. Should I do anything or now or just leave it?

Thanks

Crikey! Iv lost count of the number of caps left at fuel stations. Even with a full tank there would be minimal loss of fuel. No worries at all. Call the station and they'll keep it till next time your passing.

The diesel fuel system will deal with a little water content which is normal. You would be very unlucky in light rain to get a large volume enter the recessed filler in just a short space of time. Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

I’m always losing mine. I’ve never had a problem even with heavy rain. Although when I notice, I plug it up with something.

Water will not dilute with diesel, but being heavier will sink to the bottom of the tank. If it gets picked up, it will get trapped in the fuel filter sediment section, as long as not in large quantities. Likewise, condensation in the tank gets trapped in the filter, which is why it is good practice to occasionally drain a bit of fuel from the bottom of the filter. On a 2.4 care should be exercised so as not to allow air into the system as there is no fuel pump in the tank. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I lost at least 2-3 caps. Finally I bougth a cap with a rubber string that is tied to the car, so I dont forget it (same with the defendoor cap)
Anyway some month ago I forgot to put it in place but the noise advice that was not in position.
BTW despite to fill the defender the fuel indicator refuse to go up until I put the cap.

Censored happens. I forgot my cap once because that tiny plastic has been broken.

Keep your filters in good condition , drain water. And trust ...

Not only in Africa, but here in France we're having problems with polluted diesel, too.
