Tried the ignition on-off thing - I found 15 seconds was not enough time to get out, run round, grab ratchet, and disconnect safely. Tried a couple of dry runs, just not long enough.

Just remove the ignition key from the passenger’s side the disconnect the negative lead?
15 seconds as ample time. |

You can loosen the terminal a bit before actually removing them.
Also helps if you have a LHD |
