please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that with the centre diff locked the hand brake works on both axels, could it be that the diff lock wasnt in, was the light on?

You are correct.With diff lock engaged and hand brake,the defender will not move with no rear prop. Puma 110 SW 90 V8 SOFT TOP |

I did not know that, so the drum transmission brake works on the output shaft of the xfer box and with the xfer box locked this would in effect lock the transmission and stop the vehicle from moving.
i must admit as soon as the vehicle started to move I knew immediatelty what was wrong - just a bit late. i think chocking the wheels is also a sensible thing to do when working on the transmission. |
